Una de las pocas bandas de altura en la explosión de la segunda oleada de la Bay Area Thrash, Heathen el estilo se caracteriza por la alta velocidad, riffage preciso y la armonía, junto con secciones de canto melódico. Inspirado por los grupos de los ’70s Raimbow, la NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), y la primera ola de Thrash Metal (Metallica y Exodus), Heathen se formó a fines de 1984 con el Ruso Lee Altus (guitarras) y Carl Sacco (batería). Sam Kress vocalista y guitarrista, Jim Sanguinetti se sumó al dúo y esta versión primigenia de Heathen dio un concierto en abril de 1985. Ese año Sanguinetti (que se trasladó a Mordred) se sustituyo por Dave White de Blind Illusion y Doug Piercy de Anvil y Eric Wong (Specter) se enroló con Heathen como el primer bajista. Esta renovada línea de Heathen debutó en la Mabuhay Gardens, en San Francisco el 9 de febrero de 1986.
En abril de ese mismo año, el clásico de la banda producido independientemente Pray For Death fue grabado. Este demo allanó el camino para el contrato con la banda con Combat Records, que publicó su disco debut Heathen Breaking The Silence en 1987. Por la grabación la banda había sustituido a Eric Wong con Mike «Yaz» Jastremski de Griffin. El disco fue producido por Ronnie Montrose. Un cover de Sweet «Set Me Free» se lanzó como sencillo y fue bien recibido por la radio y tuvo gran rotación en MTV’s Headbangers’ Ball.
Breaking The Silence vendio cerca de 100,000 copias en todo el mundo.
