Los inicios de la banda se remontan al comienzo del año 1984 en la ciudad Seattle siendo parte de la primera oleada de bandas Grunge de esta ciudad. La formación tenia a Mark Arm como guitarrista y vocalista , Steve Turner como guitarrista , Jeff Ament en el bajo y Alex Vincent en la bateria para luego y rapidamente incorporar a Stone Gossard en la guitarra en reemplazo de Mark debido a que este queria concentrarse del todo en ser el vocalista. Algunos de los miembros de la banda ya se habian encontrado en distintos proyectos musicales anteriores tales como la banda Mr. Epp y la banda asociada al Hardcore The Limp Richerds de la cual fueron parte el vocalista Mark Arm y el guitarrista Steve Turner , En la banda Spluii Numa participó el baterista Alex Vincent y el bajista Jeff Ament en Deranged Diction , Gossard y Turner tocaron juntos en la banda Ducky Boys. El primer tema generado por la agrupacion fue Swallow my pride (incluido posteriormente en su primer single) el cual fuese posteriormente incluido en la banda sonora da la pelicula documental Hype! del año 1996 , este es uno de los mas famosos temas de Green River y ha tenido versiones propias por parte de distintas bandas tales como Pearl Jam , Soundgarden y Fastbacks cuya version fue incluida en el disco compilación Sub Pop 200.
