Great Lake Swimmers aparecieron en escena allá por 2004, cuando grabaron su primer disco, en un silo, álbum con el mismo título que el grupo y que mostraba canciones auténticamente estremecedoras con un sonido peculiar y un eco constante en la voz (¿será por el silo que cuenta la leyenda?) que nos aislaba en el mundo exterior; la formación liderada por Tony Dekker ofrecía una interesante interpretación del folk norteamericano. En 2005, Great Lake Swimmers fue finalmente editado en el resto del mundo y ese mismo año vio la luz su disco de consagración, titulado “Bodies and Minds“.

En Ongiara, de 2007, encontramos un pequeño giro en el rumbo de la banda. El banjo se hace más presente en las composiciones y tienen un tono mucho más luminoso y alegre en detrimento de la melancolía y oscuridad de su primer trabajo, capaz de derrumbar a cualquiera. Quizá es esa falta de intensidad lo que haga a Ongiara ser el trabajo más flojo de la banda, a pesar de contar con una producción más elaborada (aunque esto último no tiene por qué ser sinónimo de calidad) y mucha mas instrumentación, con órganos esporádicos e incluso guitarras eléctricas. Aún así, pese a todo, la voz del líder, Tony Dekker, sigue tan en forma como siempre, siendo uno de los pilares básicos del sonido de la banda.

Wonderful show at The Cedar last night in Minneapolis. Erik was, however, a bit drowned out by the violin player. That was a bummer because I love his guitar and banjo playing and could not hear it well. Tony is very gifted and the band was really tight otherwise. Thank you GLS!
