Su verdadero nombre es Giorgios Kyriacos Panayiotou. Su padre es grecochipriota y su madre es inglesa. George comenzó su carrera formando una banda llamada The Executive con su mejor amigo Andrew Ridgeley, compañero de la Bushey Meads School.
No fue sino hasta que formó el dúo Wham! con Ridgeley en 1981 que el éxito llegó a la banda. Su primer albúm, Fantastic!, fue un éxito instantáneo, y después de un año, lanzaron su sencillo debút Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do), mientras que su segundo sencillo, Young Guns (Go For It), obtuvo gran éxito en las listas de éxitos del Reino Unido. Rápidamente se hicieron famosos por canciones como Bad Boys, Club Tropicana, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, Freedom, Last Christmas/Everything She Wants, I’m Your Man. Después lanzaron su segundo albúm Make It Big. George participó en el Band Aid grabando el albúm Do They Know It’s Christmas.
Con el éxito de sus lanzamiento como solista Careless Whisper (1984) y A Different Corner (1986), se intensificaron los rumores de una separación en Wham!, hasta que en el verano de 1986 se dio esta. El duo que hace con Elton John en la canción «Don´t let the sun go down on me» en un concierto en vivo es de los mejores duetos que se hayan escuchado; dicha canción está en el disco «Ladies and Gentlemen… The Best of George Michael» y en el recoplitario «Love Songs» de Elton John.
Su albúm debút como solista, Faith, se convirtió en un éxito de ventas en ambos lados del Atlántico, tanto en el Reino Unido como en Estados Unidos.
