This is the first year I really tried to keep up with releases, but it turns out I picked a bad year for that. As I said in my top songs list, 2011 sucked for albums. It was a major release year - a ton of prominent artists released a new album this last year, and almost all of them were disappointments on some level... including ones that are actually making this list. That is what I find most disappointing - that my top 10 list has albums that were, in general, disappointing. It was also a great year for me though, in that I discovered artists I wouldn't have otherwise. Several of those are making this list as well. What's most important though is that I discovered artists this year that didn't release anything new. This proves that, with all the disappointment, there is always great stuff already out which must be heard!

So... with another year wrapped up and tons of new songs I've experienced, I could say that this was a real good round! For memory's and for fun's sake, I've listed down a good amount of progressive metal/rock albums and also things sticking outside (sic) that's been released this year. The anticipation value indicated in some albums depict how much expectations I've had for the albums before their release, as well as ratings ending in one of two types whether I might change my mind about later or confirmed.
Ratings do differ between persons, so they represent the way I relate with the albums, not how the albums perform objectively. You're free to check out any of them.

TOP METAL MELÓDICO (heavy, power, thrash, hard rock)

En este apartado, ha sido un gran año, sin duda. Un año en el que las grandes leyendas del género (tales como Saxon, Uriah Heep, o Journey), han rendido a un nivel altísimo, demostrando que el estatus de leyenda no se consigue así como así. No ha habido decepciones. Si acaso, Megadeth y su flojo TH1RT3EN. Pero nada más.

Tras aquél decepcionante Dark Passion Play, y todo el culebrón de la salida de Tarja de la banda; Tuomas y sus chicos tenían entre manos una difícil papeleta. O bien demostrar que pueden seguir sin ella, o evidenciar que sin ella no son nada. Personalmente, yo me esperaba que ocurriera lo segundo. Que nadie me malinterprete. Anette me parece una gran vocalista. Pero, sencillamente, en Nightwish no pega ni con cola. Bueno… quizás en los antiguos Nightwish. …
