    On his latest release, Eluvium eschews the swirling drone pieces that characterized his earlier albums and instead uses a more traditional compositional approach which utilizes a wide range of instruments including strings, brass, and piano. The new approach is quite welcome to these ears, as I find Eluvium's ambient work to be nice but not necessarily deeply engaging. Copia represents a wonderful step forward with more distinct-sounding compositions which hold the listener's attention and draw them into the overall atmosphere of the record.

    That's not to say this isn't still a calm and largely ambient work. In fact, a few of the tracks here remind me very much of the more recent work by ambient/drone masters Stars Of Lid, where strings and other traditional instrumentals are layered to form their own kind of lumbering ambient symphonies. …
