you're totally right about their cooperation etc. pete and chris are the "duo infernale" imo (both music-wise and personally).

Oh yes, definitely different guitar techniques. Even with Chris. That's one thing I love about the DVD. Now I can see who is playing what and I also love the extended solos as well. Chris is one hell of a guitar player in his own right. Watching him play 8 finger hammer-on patterns on the DVD is very awesome. That requires a lot of dexterity and and a knowledge of what notes will fit. Sound-wise it can be a train wreck if the player doesn't have that experience. There is a heavier aspect to Pete's writing on this record, balanced out a bit with the other writers (still don't want to give too much away) This record also displays how well Chris and Pete work together. musically and personality wise there must be really something cool about both Pete and Tom. I mean all of the line up changes throughout the band's history. They are the common denominators, they choose members very well and obviously work with them in harmony. They've proved that with every record.

you can still hear the consistency in GSDT and DCIAPS. and personally i can tell most of the songs jürgen and pete wrote apart. griefshire being a concept album just added to the change in style, it would have changed either way. i think one of the most obvious differences is the kind of guitar solo the guys use. they have very different styles imo. not saying the old stuff sounded all the same, but as a whole it sounds different from the new stuff, "over all"-speaking. the increased heavyness is probably the most prominent aspect to be mentioned...

That being said I don't so much consider Elis to be a goth metal band, I would say throw progressive in there as well. If you look at many of we older Elis fans libraries you will find quite a list of prog bands and musicians. There is a reason for this, all our lives this is what we have been drawn to, different music. We appreciate the band doesn't make the same album over and over again, how boring for fans and the band. That's what killed a lot of the 80's hairbands, their insistence on recording the same album continually (that and resting on their past achievements) Elis wants no part of that and as a music fan and musician I celebrate that about them.

Every Elis album is different. Griefshire is a concept album. Generally, concept albums are reserved for that of the progressive genre. Ayreon, (Ayreon begat Stream of Passion), Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Rush. Usually incorporating complex musical arrangements, time signatures and bordering on subjects from Sci-fi to real life events and themes. Also, concept albums are usually more highly regarded by fan bases than albums with individual songs and themes. Example amongst the Rush fanbase 2112 and Hemispheres (both concept albums) are the most popular where as Moving Pictures is the most popular amongst rock fans. Elis were experimenting with every album and I believe much of that has to do with their influences. I know Max is a Rush/Neil Peart fan (most rock drummers are) I can hear it in his playing style. He is also a Dream Theater fan. I think most of the band are as well. I don't have a favorite Elis album. I see progression in every single one.

Well..I'd say "Dark Clounds in a Perfect Sky" > "Catharsis" > "Griefshire" imho :)

griefshire was a kind of transition. it was very different from everything elis had done before and i guess it will be different from everything they are to do in the future. i call it transtition because it was the first album with pete as an (almost) sole song writer and max as a drummer, but still with sabine as a singer. now with sandra the "new" elis are established. there's a definite pre-griefshire phase and a post-griefshire phase, but the album itself is rather in between and has traits of both phases, so to speak... that's why i think there's nothing griefshire-like to be expected. actually, griefshire was pretty un-elis to me. i guess the only reason why so many people think of griefshire when they think of elis is that it was the first elis album they got to hear (due to it's presence in the media after sabine's death), but to me and also others who've been listening to elis for longer than that griefshire was quite a surprise when it was released.

Cool! the new songs are climbing up the charts. Does anyone know how well it's selling in Europe? I'm hoping they can capture their touring position just with this album alone. (headlining) I mean.

i love her witch-voice :D on the german songs: at first, something about them bothered me. not in a negative way (they are among my favorites on the album), but something seemed to be just wrong. i just couldn't grasp what it was. then after some listening it struck me: it was sandra singing in high german lol. she has sung the old songs in high german before of course, but i was used to those songs, so it didn't seem weird. now what you have to know is that she speaks austrian german, and never high german. so i'm just used to her speaking like that. now the new songs i wasn't familiar with, with her voice in high german was just sooo wrong at first lol.
