Acerca de este álbum
Tras un disco excesivamente autoindulgente, donde Dream Theater llevó los límites de su estilo a un nivel instrumental imposible y difícil de digerir como lo fue “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence”, hoy regresan con “Train of thought”, un álbum que de entrada se muestra mucho más conciso, cohesionado y directo que el anterior. Aquí la banda tomó una vibración mucho más “metálica” que “progresiva” para encarar las canciones y el resultado general es un disco pesado, con una actitud “in your face”.
Producido por la dupla Petrucci/Portnoy (¿los nuevos Hetfield/Ulrich del metal?) y mezclado por el habitual Kevin Shirley, este disco presenta los mismos problemas de sonido que el reciente “Dance of death” de Iron Maiden (“coincidentemente” también mezclado por Shirley), es decir, un sonido corrosivo, con poca nitidez y con varios pasajes donde la caja desaparece por completo. Tal vez la banda no quiere sonar sobreproducida y llena de “overdubs”, pero estas nuevas técnicas de grabación tienen mucha pérdida generacional y no me gusta cuando algún instrumento desaparece a ratos de la mezcla definitiva. En fin, es cosa de gustos, pero yo adoro el sonido claro y limpio que tienen trabajos como “Images & Words” y “Awake”.
La placa empieza demoledora con la excelente ‘As I am’, primer single del álbum, muy metálica y directa y con un solo impresionante de Petrucci, que, a la primera escuchada, (por la técnica de digitación que usa y la velocidad que le imprime), me recordó de inmediato a Paul Gilbert de Racer X.

It has a few good moments here and there, but on the whole this album is simply not worthy of their name, and I say this because I love Dream Theater. Directionless shredding, angst that sounds more immature than insightful, etc.; it is easily their worst release, and the only one that I genuinely dislike. Kudos for experimenting, but they did a far better job at being a heavier band on Awake and Systematic Chaos.
