Dir en grey es una banda de j-rock formada en 1997. Mientras que la alineación de la banda ha permanecido igual desde sus inicios, los numerosos cambios estilísticos que ha sufrido la banda hace que sea difícil su clasificación en un género. Originalmente parte del movimiento japonés visual kei, en los ultimos años ha optado por una imagen menos llamativa, llegando a ser calificados como Nu-metal, pero experimentando a tal punto de ser considerados Metal-Core.
Las raíces de Dir en grey se remontan a la banda independiente La:Sadie’s, que incluía a 4 de los actuales integrantes de Dir en grey. Después de disolverse la agrupación y de la ida del bajista Kisaki (Dueño actual del label Under-Code), Kyo, Kaoru, Die y Shinya junto con el nuevo bajista Toshiya se unieron brevemente en un grupo llamado Deathmask, pero después cambiaron ese nombre por Dir en grey tras un show en Nagano en 1997.
Un par de meses después sacaron a la venta un EP llamado Missa. En 1998 se convirtieron en la primera banda japonesa independiente que llegara a las listas del Oricon, después del lanzamiento de sus primeros sencillos JEALOUS y -I’ll-. Esto llamó la atención de Yoshiki (X Japan) , quien fue el productor de los sencillos de su segundo álbum GAUZE, lanzado en 1999. Largas giras siguieron al lanzamiento del disco, uno de estos (filmado en el Osakajo Hall) se convirtió en una de sus primeras presentaciones grabadas para VHS y DVD.

I just didn't like any of the vocal work in the album version of CLEVER SLEAZOID. My least favorite moment of the entire song was my favorite moment in the single version. I'm referring to the soft part that came around the 2 minute mark for both songs. It felt like he sang the only sweet and calm part of the song in a casual/uncompassionate manner compared to the single version to me at least. It felt like the last three tracks of TMOAB was the low point of the album. Of course it's silly to say that someone can't dislike a different version of the same song, no matter how similar you think they are to each other.

Not only they aren't that different but it is still Dir en grey. Another point I'd like to mention is, for example, Thinking that Saku is great but hating CLEVER SLEAZOID. They are different but if you can't understand both, You probably didn't get the first one in the first place. I mean, They sound different but the "idea", the "essence" is the same/or comes from the same source.
