Aunque Grizzly Bear sean mucho más conocidos, Department Of Eagles, Daniel Rossen y Fred Nicolaus, ya habían editado su disco de debut, ‘The Cold Nose’, antes de que Daniel se uniera a Grizzly Bear. Rossen compartió habitación en el campus de la Universidad de Nueva York con Fred Nicolaus, para descubrir que además compartían la pasión por la música. Su primer disco obtuvo buenas críticas pero escasa repercusión y Rossen fue reclutado por Ed Droste para el cuarteto neoyorquino. Mientras, Nicolaus trabajaba como un currito más y alimentaba su plan de pensiones sin dejar de escribir sus cosas y grabar maquetas. Rossen hacía lo mismo durante las giras, y cuando la banda se tomó un descanso ambos volvieron a unirse para parir este ‘In Ear Park’.
Aunque los ecos de Grizzly Bear son evidentes en este segundo disco del dúo, la vocación experimental de aquellos se torna en Department Of Eagles en una mayor convencionalidad en las canciones. Contra lo que pueda parecer, esto no beneficia al conjunto del álbum sino todo lo contrario. ‘In Ear Park’ muestra unas ideas maravillosas pero que, repetidas una y otra vez, pecan de linealidad.
