Well I got away from doing this for a while as I had to take a break from listening to music, but i'm back doing it (to the pleasure of nobody) now.

I've been a big fan of Deceased for a long time now. They were a band I sorta had to grow to like, but when I did, i've found that they've been one of the more consistently great bands in metal. I'm not huge on their debut, but everything else of theirs has been at worst, just solid, and at best spectacular.

I bought Surreal Overdose as part of my birthday haul and of that bunch, it's steadily grown on me. I think it's a little bit of a step down from As The Weird Travel On, but it's an outstanding album. Deceased play a style that blends together thrash, death, and heavy metal together masterfully. This is a bit more aggressive than their previous works, but I don't mind much at all. The riffage on this album is amazing and a few of the tunes on here, are among their best tunes in general. …

Merely a year after the release of Belus, Varg has put another offering on the table, albeit different from the predecessor. Fallen marks a change of pace in the Burzum discography in an attempt to oppose the imagery and ideas behind the modern black metal scene. This shift has sparked controversy among fans, with some calling it a welcomed transition from Belus and others are claiming that a once monumental pillar in the scene has “fallen” from grace. In this sense, Varg has achieved his goal: to challenge his fan base. While some will say this new side of Burzum is insignificant in comparison to the classics it’s hard to ignore the fact that there is nothing out there that resembles it. With the amalgamation of conventional black metal riffs and traditional folk inspired vocal melodies Varg has managed to stay relevant in a time where the black metal scene has stagnated.

Late to the party, as always. This year was excellent, worthy of a place in the Metal Hall of Fame, and I'm saying that without having listened to some big names like Manilla Road, Blut Aus Nord or Sabbat. So let's take a few minutes, read what I had to say about my limited sampling of the year's delights and then completely agree with me:



10. The Wounded Kings - In The Chapel of the Black Hand

Last year's "The Shadow over Atlantis" was probably the doom metal album of the year, and now they've returned with a new singer, one with teats! The album feels way too short, but for the duration, you've got the works: heavy riffs, haunting vocals, occult atmosphere... as Patrick Bruss from Crypticus said, they're "the band who unseated ELECTRIC WIZARD from the Dopethrone". Remember to light up the candles in 13 before pressing "Play".
