Formada en 1989 en Gotenburgo (Suecia), Dark Tranquillity es una de las bandas pioneras del denominado ‘Gothenburg Metal’, base del Death Metal melódico. Con una formación que ha permanecido sólida a lo largo de los años, es uno de los grupos más aclamados dentro del estilo, permaneciendo bastante fieles a sus comienzos y ganándose un enorme respeto tanto de la crítica como del público. Su historia está ligada a otro de los grandes del sonido Gotenburgo, In Flames, pues Mikael Stanne su actual vocalista comenzó en esta agrupación su carrera, al tiempo que el vocalista de In Flames Anders Friden hizo lo propio en Dark Tranquillity.
