even worse than the 2004 remaster. Overly polished guitars and muffled high frequencies. This is just my opinion, maybe because I listened to the original for a long time

It's weird, because I agree but at the same time there are many valuable details more prominent. Perhaps remastering it with full dynamic range could turn it into an amazing alternative to the original.

Can understand how Focus was probably very different and groundbreaking back in 1993, but listening to it compared to all the prog death thats come out since then today it just sounds very disorganized and meandering.

It sounds fucking insane, what the hell are you talking about? The riffs they're playing are unreal, the rhythms are wild. It's ear wormy, it's jazzy, it's progy. What even matches Cynic besides Gorguts, Blood Incantation, or Death in terms of this sort of technical style?

I never got the demo compilation since I already had all of those demo tracks well before that demo compilation was ever released. Are the demo tracks remastered on the compilation? If yes, don't care. However, are the two demo tracks of Brian DeNeffe's vocal audition that are exclusively found on that compilation worth listening to? Never heard of Brian DeNeffe.

still really enjoying Ascension Codes, really unique approach to songwriting and they pulled it off wonderfully

Agreed, loved the record. Let's hope to get the chance to see them live, they seem to be starting touring again!

I love focus but damn can you imagine if it was recorded 2 years earlier in the style of the 91 demo ....

Focus was intended to be a continuation in the style of the 91 demo, but Masvidal was too worried he was losing his voice at the time.

I kinda feel the same. While the interludes certainly do add some to the atmosphere, they kinda feel a little bit cringy and too much of a 'THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE' attitude, which definitely isn't what I'm looking for. The actual songs are really great, tho.

Much like Controlled Bleeding, Cynic is one of those rare bands who can shift into different genres as effortlessly as possible and still put out very top quality material.

Veil of Maya is a popular concept from Hinduism. I suppose it's possible that the band got the name from Cynic, but I hear no similarities between the two so I doubt it

True and you're probably right, but then again Heaven Shall Burn sounds nothing like Marduk and Marduk is the reason why they got their name. Another example that's non metal is the song Radio Gaga by Queen is what got Lady Gaga her name and Lady Gaga sounds nothing like Freddie Mercury or Queen. So it can be possible. Given that the origin of Veil of Maya seems to be in multiple places, you're probably right, but I mean there are examples where there are exceptions to what you said as well imo.

Yeah I know, one example off the top of my head is the band Spiral Architect (highly recommend their album if you're a big Cynic fan). Their name comes from the Black Sabbath song despite sounding nothing like it

IDK even know how much I can describe how much Cynic and their companion bands Death, Gordian Knot, and Aeon Spoke meant to me when I was 14 or so. RIP Sean! I wish I could have seen you jam!
