  • What should I play next?

    9 Dic 2009, 17:35 de iriihutoR48

So I have an awful amount of games that I haven't played/finished and I need some people to say "this sucks" or "best game ever, play it next" about them. Score them like 10/10 if you have played them and have some opinions. Information about game length would be awesome too since short + sweet games will be moved up the que 'til I've finished some of the list.

And you don't have to comment on all games, just some you have opinions about.

    Games:

    PSX:
    Valkyrie Profile

    PS2:
    Persona 4
    SMT: Digital Devil Saga
    SMT: Digital Devil Saga 2
    SMT: Nocturne
    Valkyrie Profile 2: Simeria
    Okami
    Radiata Stories
    Suikoden V
Final Fantasy XII (first FF game I haven't even finished)
    Rogue Galaxy
GTA: San Andreas (Played it pretty far, but the flight missions killed my will to finish it)
Suikoden Tactics (didn't really like this one)
    Xenosaga 2
    Magna Carta: Tears of Blood

    PS3:
    GTA 4
    Metal Gear Solid 4: GotP
    Fallout 3
    Dead Space
    Valkyria Chronicles*
    Assassin's Creed*
    Resident Evil 5*

*I don't actually own the last three games but I'm buying them cheap from a friend.

Music I will consider listening to while playing: Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady GaGa, Metallica, Slipknot, Miles Davis, Burzum, Arcade Fire, Interpol, Animal Collective and Franz Ferdinand.

  • Musical Receptors of my Brain as represented by Pocky™ sticks

    8 Dic 2009, 14:01 de davidkarasick

Since moving to Japan 4 months ago, it seems like my listening habits have drastically changed...

Here's the readout of my top 10 most listened to artists over the last 3 months of my time in Japan (in order of most scrobbled tracks to least):

    1 - Weezer - 744
    2 - Tenacious D - 144
    3 - Coldplay - 122
    4 - Radiohead - 119
    5 - Phoenix - 102
    6 - Beck - 88
    7 - Justice - 74
    8 - Air - 73
    9 - Daft Punk - 55
10 - The Presidents of the United States of America - 50

Seems very different than what I was listening to the rest of the year:

    1 - Yoko Kanno - 545
    2 - Radiohead - 403
    4 - Coldplay - 303
    3 - James Taylor - 355
    5 - Beastie Boys - 299
    6 - Daft Punk - 243
    7 - Air - 198
    8 - Justice - 187
    9 - Beck - 185
    10 - Weezer - 108

I wonder if this could be a musical graph of my brain of when it's functioning in Japan vs. how it has been functioning in the USA ?

... that's a good idea, actually, ok, let's try making into a graph made out of Pocky™ :

The chocolate represents the sweet, sweet life in Japan that I have built on the foundation of a hearty wheat-flavored year of preparation to move abroad. Yummy! Oooh, this is making me hungry. Time for dinner. I think I'll make Japanese Croquettes!

Oh right, but how about Graph Analysis first?

Looks like my 2009 Weezer, Tenacious D and Phoenix Pocky™ sticks consist entirely of Japanese chocolate! Those bands are all pretty darn fun to listen to as they radiate their strange and adventurous sound. That goes for Weezer especially. Their albums have always seemed so refreshingly polarizing! If those are the positive bands, then Phoenix, Radiohead and Coldplay are the flip side of it all. These three bands feature music with passionate yet stressed out emotionally confused motifs, melodies and lyrics. They add an extra layer to what has been going on in my brain these last few months.

So if we go back before all that, the solid launch-pad of a wheat stick that I lived on before flying to Japan looks like it consisted of Radiohead, Yoko Kanno and Coldplay (plus a stellar Justice/Daft Punk Combo). So it looks like I had high highs with the need to dance it all out. Though again, it looks like there were even rougher lows to come back down to. You can see the downswings with some heavy Coldplay and Radiohead usage. Yoko Kanno a big force in there too. She's always my top artist, kind of like my balancing force between everything... who is conspicuously absent from my Japanese chocolate.

So if you look carefully, there is a lot of Japanese chocolate focused on only a few strange, fun and polarizing things... and lots of USA wheat spread evenly between fun, awesome, inspiring, stressed out and confusing.

  • Quick reviews 4

    8 Dic 2009, 1:43 de dx_xb

From Rotting Fantasylands - Nero's Day At Disneyland [2009]
Breakcore without dubstep but with occasional chiptunes.
The songs are more structured than Venetian Snares songs, in that the songs follow a set melody. There is a slight circus theme to the music.

Central Park Jogger - FFH and Prurient [2009]
Surprisingly, it's not a shock album, but a strong noise album with nods to the early power electronic sound, without ripping it off.
Too much distortion to be called power electronics, but takes it's cues from power electronics by adding spoken word samples, especially spoken word samples taken from the media.
Reminds me of Death Mask, with it's messy ambiance of layered analog noise.

    Alphabet 1968 - Black to Comm [2009]
An excellent album with a light, ethereal feel.
Incorporation of beats and other various samples keep the music interesting, but, like most ambient, the music is still relaxing and comforting.
Sounds like Tim Hecker or the slowcore version of an instrumental Animal Collective.

    koffing ep - Koffing [2009]
Like Lustmord with more percussion instruments that sound like Harry Partch's instruments.
It's not spooky. It reminds me of some art student's project on sound collage.

Eyes Of The Owl - eyes of the owl [2009]
Like Sleep or a heavier, sludgier Minsk.
Sparse vocals, that are never distracting, whether they're screechy or monk like chants.
Glorious heavy music to zone out to.

Central Market - Tyondai Braxton [2009]
Tyondai Braxton is from Battles. Unsurprisingly, the music sounds like it's related to Battles.
Central Market is somehow both silly and sophisticated. Due to the wide variety of instruments and how they're utilized, there's an orchestra feel to the album similar to Peter and the Wolf. In other words, it sounds like a symphony for children.
One exception is J. City, which is the only track that has lyrics and a bouncy guitar melody. Rest assured though, it's still quite unusual.

    Two Sunsets - Pastels/Tenniscoats [2009]
Sugary sweet, down-tempo, Japanese music. No thanks.

    Absence - Paper Route [2009]
    Another boring Christian band.

Gambling on the Richter Scale - Kowloon Walled City [2009]
    Rumbley, bass-driven metal.
I'm not too crazy about the singers voice. A deeper, more manly voice would compliment the music better, imo.
A rather unremarkable, but enjoyable album.
    It's a free d/l from last.fm.

    Static Tensions - Kylesa [2009]
Metal with hardcore and a hint of stoner rock/sludge. The mixture of different styles compliment each another very nicely. Also, delicious drum work is delicious.
    Running Red sounds like Minsk.

Here Be Dragons - The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble [2009]
    One of Bong-Ra's side projects.
live bootleg>mutations ep>s/t and here be dragons

Succubus - The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation [2009]
Another one of Bong-Ra's side projects; it's similar to tkde.
I think I like this better than their last album. It has less doom and more jazz, and the songs are a lot more interesting.

    Petturien rooli - Grunt [2009]
    Power electronics from Finland.
Not just another Whitehouse ripoff; they have their own sound. Interesting layering and lots of samples that give the songs a unique texture.

Still Night, Still Light - Au Revoir Simone [2009]
    Another typical girl-fronted indie band
    Pass.

    Agonist - Latitudes [2009]
    Almost instrumental, melodic death metal.
The singer's voice is pretty like a girls.

Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian - Prefuse 73 [2009]
    Mostly instrumental idm/hip-hop.
Paul White, a similar artist, managed to pull off this style much better with The Strange Dreams of Paul White. I would not say this is a bad album though; it just meanders more than I'd like. Some of the tracks could be shortened up, and some of them are boring and need to be revamped.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix [2009]
    Upbeat, indie-pop with neo-disco leanings
Reminds me of jupiter one's s/t, a lot. In their defense though Phoenix was around first, so I suppose it's really the other way around.
Fences is a pretty catchy track with Bee Gees-like vocals.

    Sunshower - Jupiter One [2009]
Much, much worse than their s/t.
They've shed most of their disco trappings in favor of simple, over-used guitar melodies.
Anna reminds me so much of the theme from growing pains, As long as we've got each other.

See the Light - The Hours [2009]
Boring, slick, down-tempo pop. Coldplay for indie kids.
