Both songs are excellent. This one has the pop sensibility that the Buzzcocks are just so amazing at, while Shot by Both Sides has the challenging post-punk edge...a bit more sinister with the chord progression in the verse. I think Magazine has the better song overall, but Lipstick is a bit more fun to listen to.

Genius. Love how quickly this can switch from bright to sinister.

shot by both sides infinitely better. lot of love for buzzcocks though, this has a really great crunchy powerful pop sound to it, bit mean as well, which i like.

Love Buzzcocks , if your interested I have many videos I filmed of Buzzcocks performing Live back in 1994 on mylittletelly youtube channel. heres a link to a full concert in Portugal when they supported Nirvana. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySI0hrGsDwM

apparently shelley came up with the riff and showed it to howard; explaining that howard could have it and do whatever with it.

I too prefer the Magazine-version. With the more dramatic and more tickling, attention demanding Howard Devoto. That's the story of 2 different bands with the same roots.

I've always wondered why the similarity myself - i think i might just prefer the magazine version though - dunno - they're both great songs in their own right - also, i could swear the same riff is used AGAIN in one of the tracks in the oft channel-5-repeated film 'broken arrow'

  • imawkward

well howard devoto did form magazine so the guitar could be because of that... although magazine's came out before buzzcock's if i'm not mistaken. oh well i like them both.
