Los fundadores de «Bohren» Thorsten Benning (batería), Robin Rodenberg (Bajo), Reiner Henseleit (guitarra), Morten Gass (guitarra / piano) empezaron a tocar música juntos en 1988. Eran amigos de la escuela y comparten un gusto común para todo tipo de música extrema como Grindcore, Hardcore, Death o Doom Metal.
Impulsados por la idea de un estilo más singular de la música, formaron «Bohren» («Perforar» en alemán) en 1992 empiezan a tocar, como ellos llaman, “doom ridden jazz music”.
De 1993, la banda se da a conocer con un e.p. homónimo para Suggestion Records. También en el 93 amplían el nombre de la banda a Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, como un vínculo con el grupo holandés instrumental Gore, que inspiró a «Bohren» para hacer música instrumental.
1994 siguió el LP Gore Motel y el doble LP Midnight Radio (1995), ambos en Epistrophy Records, donde «Bohren» introduce su visión musical entre el jazz lento y las guitarras doom.
1996 Reiner Henseleit deja la banda.
En 1997 el compositor y músico Christoph (saxo, piano) se une a la banda y en el elenco T. Benning (batería), C. Closer (saxo), M. Gass (Fender Rhodes), R. Rodenberg (bajo ), la agrupación que todavía sigue hasta hoy lanzan Sunset Mission (2000) bajo el sello Wonder.
2002 se edita Black Earth donde la banda intentó ampliar las posibilidades su sonido particular explorando nuevas vías a partir de su disco del 2000, posteriormente graban el álbum conceptual Geisterfaust (2005). Este ultimo lleva los principios de reducción y compresión a los extremos, y al mismo tiempo es un banda experimental (Tuba, Trombón-Bass, Vibráfono, coro).
