"When you think that you've lost everything, you find out you can always lose a little more! I'm just goin' down the road feeling bad, tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door." I love the way he sings "You can always loooose a little more"!

"I was riding in a buggy with Ms. Mary Jane, Ms. Mary Jane got a house in Baltimore" are delivered as if they were the saddest possible statements in the world. Which, at the moment Bob sings them, indeed they are. (And sogletho, I tip my hat to the thought behind your comment, but you're forgetting Leonard Cohen!)

I love the way this song follows up on Most of the Time, eight years later, in one of the lines Ralf quoted: "Every day your memory grows dimmer. It don't haunt me like it did before." And yes, probably one of Bob's best!

The air is getting hotter, there’s a rumbling in the skies. I’ve been wading through the high muddy water, with the heat rising in my eyes. Every day your memory grows dimmer, it doesn’t haunt me like it did before. I’ve been walking through the middle of nowhere, trying to get to heaven before they close the door.

This is really one of Dylan's most impressive songs, I think. It feels like it was always there in a way, just waiting to be written.

Such an emotionally exhausting song. Brilliant.

Anyone who says that is a damn fool... TOOM towers above the modern Dylan catalogue and is the ultimate example of the wandering cowboy/civil war romantic Dylan.

it seems in vogue nowadays to say "love and theft" and "modern times" are a cut above the "dated" lanois productions of "time out of mind", but none of the tracks from those albums have better lyrics than "tryin' to get to heaven". brilliant brilliant brilliant.
