  • A slightly drunken listen along review of Nouns

    13 Jul 2009, 0:48 de dx_xb

I'm a little drunk, and I'm listening to Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours.
I listen to some track on a blog and didn't care for it.

    track one:
Reminds me of the sort of music Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti makes fun of. Is this a more straight faced-mockery of this genre of music or
is this more authentic? Sound like some cheap 80's Blondie rip-off that you'd hear at a skating rink.
!!! is better dance fodder than this.

    track 2:
36 secs in eh, this sounds like something a shitty local dj threw together.
    jesus *skips*

Fuck this, I'm going to listen to Nouns.

    track one:
Slow, drawn-out shoegaze vocals underneath give-it-all-ya-got style rock.

    track 2:
I dunno what he's saying, but I like the sentiment. Nice use of tambourine here.
This song kinda reminds me of Wake Up by Arcade Fire, or gives me the same "vibes" as it were. It's like if Win Butler sang in a cave with a scarf over his mouth.

    track 3:
Next track already?! The last one was over kinda quick.
45 secs in Christ I hate this vocal style combined with this music. Ugh, too much atonal nonsense. This reminds me of kids taunt-singing na-nana-na-boo-boo.
    2:25 in *skips*

    track 4:
Something about the vocals are mixed in this one make me think they're trying too hard to sound interesting. Otherwise, it's a nice song. If some woman breath-ally sang the vocals I'd love it. At least it's over before I can become too annoyed with it.

    track 5:
Love the beginning to this one; it just hits the ground running. I'm undecided as to how I feel about the vocals though, which I suppose is an improvement.

    track 6:
One thing I will give it up for is this album has just the right track lengths.
1:27 reminds me of some kind of post-rock band, can't remember which one though.
3:19 This is some sort of a noodling track that serves as a breather, I suppose.

    track : 7
Something like a punk sound on this track.
2 mins in almost reminds of Pavement in way

    track 8:
Once again, the last track felt like it was just the right length.
53 secs in almost reminds me of that one blink-182 song, EscucharAll The Small Things, enough to sound like a weird cover of it anyway.
1:30 weird vocals that don't really go with the music. The vocals sorta sound like the tune of the mst3k theme song.

    track 9:
Ick, the vocals sound better when they are in the background. 1 min mark
more punk-like sounds, which suits this vocal style better.

    track 10:
Starts out with a nice brooding acoustic guitar melody and then branches out into a fuzzy shoegaze sound. A new peppier guitar melody joins in and plays over top the original sounds. This one reminds me of a Black Dice song, something off of Creature Comforts.

    track 11:
Drums and tambourine kick this one off. This song reminds me of some 60's or 70's song.
I can't remember which specific song though.
1:49 ends with a Fennesz-like sound, which is a surprise.

    track 12:
This melody sounds so familiar, maybe like a The Brother Kite song, only with sneering punk-like vocals.
I like that the last line of the album is "look what I've become;"
pretty befitting of an album that made so many people's best of list last year.

The vocals waver between being interesting and annoying, which I'm sure was the point. This album deserves more listens before I decide my final verdict, which is a complement of sorts.

  • Through The Years

    8 May 2009, 22:14 de its_only_love

If you take a look at my top artists on last.FM, you'll see Switchfoot, The Beatles, U2, Coldplay, tobyMac, and Thousand Foot Krutch. It is a pretty diverse group in itself. But, if you dig even deeper into my library, you'll see that I don't just listen to rock (which makes up a majority of my top artists), but every sub-genre related and the origins of rock: oldies that span the 60s - 80s. I have a hip-hop artist in my list, but I listen to some reggae and crunk as well. And what about country? Got that too. Pop? A little. How about some latin music? Si, mi amigo.

Overall, my taste in music is pretty wide. It's been shaped over the span of my lifetime by different artists and phases of music. To study what I used to listen to and what I listen to now is interesting.

So, I thought it would be fun to take a look at a "history of music" during my life. While I'm not going to record every single artist I've ever listened to, I am going to hit the high points (or low points) and include a song that I liked from an artist that I listened to frequently during that period of time.

    Enjoy!

    The Early Years
    1989-1999

My earliest memories of music are those in which I am in the family car, listening to our local oldies radio station. It's funny, because my very first introduction to music turned out to be my most influential, since many of the artists I listened to on that oldies station are artists that I listen to now. Then again, can't go too wrong with the classics, can you?

A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles
Fun, fun fun by The Beach Boys
    EscucharWild Thing by The Troggs
    EscucharStayin' Alive by Bee Gees
EscucharOwner Of A Lonely Heart by Yes
    EscucharTightrope by Stevie Ray Vaughan
EscucharHold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by U2
Kiss From a Rose by Seal
    EscucharFly Away by Lenny Kravitz

Mainstream Radio and the Pop Invasion
    2000-2002

As I grew up, I quickly realized that listening to the same oldies station that my parents were listening to was "uncool." I had to have music of my own. Music that my peers were listening to. I was one of those fortunate souls to grow up when the world was introduced to Pop. Oh, the joys of those days. In 2002, I would smuggle a hand-held radio into my room and listen to it at night (against my parent's wishes). My former "tolerance" of Pop music soon grew into a taste for Hip-Hop and I discovered Rock-N-Roll all over again.

    Soul Tattoo by Plus One
    Bye Bye Bye by *NSYNC
EscucharI Want Candy by Aaron Carter
    EscucharThe Call by Backstreet Boys
    Happy by Ashanti
    EscucharI'm Real by J-Lo

    EscucharComplicated by Avril Lavigne
EscucharThe Middle by Jimmy Eat World
When I'm Gone by 3 Doors Down
EscucharRock Your Body by Justin Timberlake
    Lose Yourself by Eminem
    Blurry by Puddle of Mudd
EscucharHow You Remind Me by Nickelback

    Rebels and Punks
    2003

After soon discovering that pop music was only a form of mind-control on naive and hormonal teenagers, I quickly determined that it no longer had a hold on me. I was going to rebel. Upon entering middle school and high school, I really needed to rebel. What better way to achieve that then to listen to the rebels of the music industry - punks and goths! Hardcore, man!

    EscucharThe Anthem by Good Charlotte
    Addicted by Simple Plan
EscucharAll The Small Things by Blink-182
    Pictures by No Need
When I Come Around by Green Day
    Not Done Yet by Superchic[k]
    Breakdown by Relient K
EscucharBroke in the Head by Bleach
Far Away by By The Tree
    EscucharMeant To Live by Switchfoot
    EscucharReality by Big Dismal

    Dark Days and Heavy Nights
    2004-2005

Punk wasn't edgy enough. I needed something even more outrageous and outlandish. I needed something harder. Queue heavy metal music! While it's rockin', it's not a very good influence. This period of my life was very dark and depressing. Friends sent me full-length albums through AIM and I burned them to CDs, spiraling further into depression and hopeless times. It wasn't until October of 2005, when I watched a video testimonial from Christian musician Jeremy Camp, that I placed my burned CDs in a drawer and haven't listened to them since.

A New Perspective and Branching Out
    2006-2009

It's true, I used to listen to more secular music than Christian music. Now, it is the other way around. What I've found during the course of my life is this: music isn't just about peer pressure, looking cool and catchy hooks. It's about making art and believing in something. I listen to music that I believe in with messages that encourage, uplift, and minister to my mind, heart and soul. Sure, I'll throw on some Family Force 5 or The Ting Tings if I want to have fun, but once it comes down to it, I choose to listen to music that inspires, motivates, and influences me - in the right way!

With that said, here's a list of songs that I find the most influential and that I can truly call my own:

    EscucharBurn Out Bright by Switchfoot
EscucharWho Wouldn't Wanna Be Me by Keith Urban
    EscucharBeautiful Day by U2
    EscucharGirl America by Mat Kearney
    EscucharLost! by Coldplay
    EscucharMade to Love by tobyMac
EscucharCall My Name by Third Day
