Blind Melon, provenientes de Mississippi, Indiana y Pensilvania, se forma en 1990 en el estado de California. Ya con este nombre, se dirigieron a Capitol Records donde se interesaron en su cuarto demo, llamado «The Goodfoot Workshop» Aunque la banda sólo tenía un repertorio limitado de canciones en el momento, ellos convencieron a la discográfica que tenían un numero considerable de composiciones, firmando por el sello en 1991. La banda comenzó a trabajar en un EP brevemente después de esto, producido por el productor de siempre de Neil Young, David Briggs y titulado «The Sippin’ Time Sessions». Pero aunque el resultado final fue sorprendente, el proyecto fue archivado. En ese mismo año con algunas colaboraciones (Axl Rose, Pearl Jam, etc) Salió el vídeo «No rain» que fue un éxito y fue platino cuatro veces, a pesar de los rumores de que el cantante Shannon Hoon, padecía por sus abusos con las drogas.
Algo emocionante para esta banda que lanzó en 1992 su primer disco «Blind Melon». Ya con temas realmente buenos, llenos de letras accesibles, y con un estilo sencillo. También tuvó otros temas como «Change» y «I wonder». Ya de eso el grupo se fue para New Orleans con el productor Andy Wallace.
En 1995 se hizo el album «Soup». Un disco algo más maduro que el primero, la voz un poco decaída por el cantante, debido a sus abusos con las drogas. También, en ese mismo año, Blind Melon hizo una contribución con la canción «Out on the Tiles» para Encomium, un CD tributo a Led Zeppelin. Y una canción de un CD promocional con un cover de School House rock: «Three is a magic number».
