Sat 20 Apr – Blackmore's Night

[Addendum 2009: This review was written Apr 21st 2002 right after the concert and published in USENET group alt.music.deep-purple -- I just found it in my archives and attached here as well]

I just got back from Blackmore's Night concert and what a stunning show it was. We were treated with 5 encores (OK, the break between 4th and 5th was short one but I still reckon the number is five). Below some brief
thoughts about the show.

First set took 95 minutes and total showtime was 2h 22 min so I gather
the band must have been in good mood.

During the first half of the first set there were some occasional
shouting from audience but I think Candice handled the situation quite
well (with some help from stern-looking roadies). There were also some
funny audience interactions:

From audience: Clock ticks on!
Candice: Ah, we'll get there..
Audience: Kill the king!
Candice: Ah, we might not get there..

I did not write down the setlist, but I recall it was similar to the
ones in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Show started with Shadow of the
Moon which had some new guitar solos which were classic TMIB solos.

For me one of the highlights during the first set was Sixteenth Century Greensleeves which was played quite heavily and also with 'classic'
style.

1st encore was I Still Remember, 2nd was Wish You Were Here / Ocean Gypsy. 3rd encore was Writing on the Wall - one the concert
highlights. During WotW the backing singer joined Candice at the front
stage and they sang the song as duet. There were also brief, but quite
good keyboard, bass and drum solos. And Ritchie, he went wild with his
Strat showing that he can still play like 20+ years ago. When the BN
live CD/DVD comes out I surely hope it'll have WotW on it.

4th encore was very nice instrumental, probably from Under a Violet
Moon (sorry, could not remember the song name). At this point it was
quite clear that Ritchie was having good time because he just kept
playing and didn't seem to want to stop. 5th encore was Clock Ticks On. After that Ritchie, Candice and the band shook hands with
audience.

I was very impressed by CK's performance; she truly can sing and she
also has strong stage charisma. Same goes for the guy playing 2nd
guitar / violin / etc. who put out a very solid performance.

I've lost all criticism towards RB long time ago so it's quite
needless to say that his performance was absolutely stunning.

Concert sound was very good, the mix was very clear (although I
couldn't hear the backing singer very often) and the overall sound
pressure was loud enough but not too loud.

The venue was approximately 1400 seater hall and it was sold out in
one day so I hope this sends a signal to BN management that here is
demand for BN concerts also later on.
