  • One album for each year I've been alive.

    19 Dic 2009, 21:56 de Spark_and_Spark

I hate seeing all these little games (or 'memes' as people call them) in the Related Journals section, since these games/quizzes seem to be the only thing people use the Last.fm journal for! But, here I am, falling in line.

I thought this one was quite cool, so here I go.

(1991) Loveless – My Bloody Valentine
Nice way to start off. I'm sure there's nothing new to say about this album. If you've never heard it, go listen to it now. And listen to it loud. It's gorgeous.

Other honourable mentions for '91 would be P・O・P by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S (hard, fast punk rock) and The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest (classic hip hop, with jazz.)

    (1992) Automatic for the People – R.E.M.
Very slow and melancholic and kinda depressing. It's, of course, one of the best albums I've heard. EscucharSweetness Follows is one of my favourite songs. It's so good.

カプセル・スープ ("Capsule Soup") by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S is another great CD from '92.

(1993) Midnight Marauders – A Tribe Called Quest
One of the best hip-hop albums ever, for sure. The Tribe know what they're doing.

Recipe for Hate by Bad Religion is another very, very good album from '93. And of course Björk's Debut.

(1994) Blowout Comb – Digable Planets
Well, I do like hip-hop jazz, and Digable Planets got it goin' on. Great album, and highly unappreciated.

Quite a lot of runners up: Dummy by Portishead... Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion... Mix-Ism and Park by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S... Let's Go by Rancid....
    Good year.

(1995) ...And Out Come the Wolves – Rancid
In a similar tone for what I said with Midnight Marauders, this is one of the best punk albums ever. Fo' sho'.

Scratch or Stitch by Melt-Banana is another good one from '95.

(1996) 4 Plugs – The Mad Capsule Markets
Bass driven punk rock. It's awesome, all the way through. I love you Takeshi.

Not much else from '96 that I can think of. Any recommendations?

    (1997) OK Computer – Radiohead
My first Radiohead album (surprise) and definitely one of their best. Good ol' depressing Radiohead.
I never really liked The Bends myself... strange, I know.

Homogenic by Björk is my second choice for '97. A classic album.

    (1998) Keasbey Nights – Catch 22
Shall I do it again? One of the best ska-punk albums ever. Oh yes.

Charlie by Melt-Banana was another good one. And Life Won't Wait by Rancid. I liked how they experimented with reggae and ska on that one.

    (1999) Vent fou – Jorane
Jorane has got to be one of the most under appreciated or simply unknown artists ever. Seriously, listen to this album, it's amazing.

Other mentions go to... Black Sails in the Sunset by AFI. Back when they were good. No Gods / No Managers by Choking Victim, and GAUZE by DIR EN GREY. (I like it.)

    (2000) Teeny Shiny – Melt-Banana
Very interesting album. Weird. And amazing. Very amazing.

16mm by Jorane and Rancid (2000) by Rancid get runner up for the millennium.

(2001) A Call to Arms – Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution
Very unique and uncategorizable music. All acoustic, of course. Strings, horns, guitars, drums, brilliant lyrics from Tomas Kalnoky... I highly recommend this EP.

This would be tied with Amnesiac by Radiohead, my favourite album by them.
Vespertine by Björk and 010 by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S also deserve mention.

(2002) Turn on the Bright Lights – Interpol
Interpol's debut is their best, in my opinion. I suppose it's good that they moved away from the Joy Division sound after a while and got their own sound, but I do love the type of music they were playing here. Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down is one of the best songs ever.

鬼葬 ("Kisou") by DIR EN GREY was another good one of 2002. One of their best albums, I'd say.

(2003) Everything Goes Numb – Streetlight Manifesto
One of those life changing albums for me. I'm not quite sure what it changed exactly... but it reached something deep, emotionally. Yeah, it's good.

犯行声明文 ("Hankou Seimeibun") by the GazettE also came out in 2003. It's my favourite release by them. Oh, and there's VULGAR by DIR EN GREY. Very good album.

(2004) The Power Out – Electrelane
Electrelane are a really good band. All female too, which is cool.
Nice warm atmosphere about this album. Quite gentle.

(2005) in the direction of sunrise and night light – Deadman
One of my favourite albums. deadman just have such a great sound. Shame they broke up. I miss Mako's voice. At least aie and his unique guitar playing hasn't stopped activity.

Withering to death. by DIR EN GREY also came out 2005. Good stuff.
And 蛾蟇 ("Gama") by the GazettE. I really like this EP.

(2006) You Are There – Mono
MONO are geniuses. Some of the best music out there.

(2007) Somewhere In The Between – Streetlight Manifesto
Another classic album from Streetlight. The best kind of ska-punk there is.

studs by the studs was another great release for 2007. I didn't really like anything the band did after this EP though. Ah well...

(2008) UROBOROS – Dir en grey
Probably my favourite album... ever. So of course it's my 2008 pick.

devils in bedside by 9GOATS BLACK OUT is also one of my favourite CDs. Good times in 2008. And the Let the Right One In soundtrack by Johan Söderqvist. It's beautiful.

(2009) 沈黙の音 ("Chinmoku no oto") – …。【サイレンス】 ("Silence")
I already made a journal entry about 2009 releases, so I won't dwell too much. But this EP is quite excellent.

Black rain by 9GOATS BLACK OUT and xx by The xx were also very good.

Well, that was how I wasted my time today. Let's see what I can do to kill time tomorrow...

    18 Dic 2009, 2:02 de PrincipeAzul

i've come to realize the ridiculousness of creating an actual LIST from 1 to 10 comparing disparate albums. how r u gonna say grizzly bear is better than raekwon?? or vice-versa? like, would compare the beatles to mozart??? no! just because they both made music doesn't mean they're even remotely doing the same thing. so in the spirit of this realization, here's a list of 2009 "bests" that doesn't really categorize one album as any more "best" than another.

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Bat For Lashes is a pseudonym for the Pakistan-born British singer-songwriter Natasha Khan; a talented young woman, who’s been one of the most enticing discoveries for me this year. Her ethereal voice carries qualities reminiscent of Enya, Björk and Tori Amos. She is also someone who understands the meaning of music as an art of storytelling. And communicating your emotions via metaphors. The trick with this is to know what you're doing; once you do it wrong, it's stupid, but when you're good at it, it's ingenius. Music is so dumbed down nowadays that the term "concept album" makes people go: "Omg! Who does she think she is, trying to be smart? She's pretentious!". Bullshit. This is what music is supposed to be – ambitious and creative, not dragged down to the lowest common denominator.

Ok, lemme unravel the "plot" of this album song by song, for the slow-minded folk. Two Suns is a thematic album that deals with the dual nature of ourselves and our existence. Basically, it relies on the metaphysical principle of yin and yang - light and dark, good and evil, love and pain, male and female, etc. If you're familiar with fairy tales or myths, the lyrical content shouldn't be overly difficult to grasp. She's not reinventing the wheel in here.

EscucharGlass... This booming opening number is about her quest for her soulmate, "a knight in crystal armor", but "when two suns are shining, the battle becomes blinding" - relationships are not easy to maintain; "but we ride tonight / tonight, tonight we ride" - each moment together counts.
EscucharSleep Alone... a pretty straightforward song about loneliness and the comfort offered by a lover in her dreams (later on she reveals his name).

EscucharMoon And Moon... explores the idea of "genderbendering". "I’d be boy and you'd be girl", "calling moon and moon" - two opposites become each other, the essence of androgyny.
EscucharDaniel... is about escaping your nightmares to find safety in the arms of your lover (who may or may not be Karate Kid, haha). The most gorgeous song on the album. Stylistically, it’s like a fantasy that transports you through time right into the 80’s.
EscucharPeace Of Mind... speaks about reaching a zen-like state within yourself; a higher, calmer level of being. Rise above your troubles, rise above your fears, conquer that side of yourself.
EscucharSiren Song... the temptation to succumb to her dark alter ego – the "femme fatale" figure (whom she calls Pearl) - is the most prevalent in this one.
EscucharPearl's Dream... Pearl and her desires become more ambiguous, she becomes attracted to innocence and light. "You know that it's time to go up, up, up, up, up... had a big machine riding your shoulders."
EscucharGood Love... talks about being torn between self-destructive tendencies (passion, jealousy) in a relationship and the yearning to hold on to a healthy relationship and how these two aspects are not always easy to separate from one another.

EscucharTwo Planets... she again uses mythical motives to illustrate how life consists of two opposing forces - "day cannot exist without a night", - and how we all are the universe and the universe is us.
EscucharTravelling Woman... a journey to self-realization.
EscucharThe Big Sleep... come on, do I really have to explain this one?

If people bothered to think a little or use their imagination more, the wonderful works of art we have would be rated accordingly.

    9/10

    LYRICS:

Daniel, when I first saw you
I knew that you had a flame in your heart
    And under wild blue skies
    Marble movie skies
I found a home in your eyes
    We'll never be apart

    And when the fires came
The smell of cinders and rain
    Perfumed almost everything
We laughed and laughed and laughed

    And in the golden blue
    Car you took me to
    The darkest place you knew
And set fire to my heart

When I run in the dark, Daniel
To a place that's lost, Daniel
Under a sheet of rain in my heart, Daniel
    I dream of home

    But in a goodbye bed
With my arms around your neck
Into our mouths the tears crept
Just kids in the eye of the storm

And as my head spun round
My dreams pulled me from the ground
Forever to search for the flame
    For home again
    For home again

When I run in the dark, Daniel
To a place that's lost, Daniel
Under a sheet of rain in my heart, Daniel
    I dream of home

  • Top 200 Songs of the Decade: Part 3

    14 Dic 2009, 17:56 de likecrocodiles

    101. Muse - Map Of Your Head
Impressively, this is one of two Muse B-sides on the list, showing the depth of their catalogue.

    102. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - EscucharMaps
This was released back in 2003 and it still feels fresh.

    103. Death Cab for Cutie - EscucharMarching Bands of Manhattan
Okay, the lyrics are mostly cringe-worthy (except for the part about living like a hermit in your own head), but it's a great tune.

    104. Oceansize - Massive Bereavement
Oceansize is probably the most underrated band of our time. The climax of this song is mind-blowing.

    105. Slow Club - Me and You
"I've got a feeling someone else is reading the letters I wrote to you."
"Well my pet's illiterate and I live alone, so it's someone in betwixt of me and you."

    106. The Mars Volta - Meccamputechture
They manage to make a saxophone sound menacing, which is an accomplishment in itself.

    107. Oceansize - Meredith
The first Oceansize song I really loved. Apparently this was on The O.C.?

    108. The National - Mistaken for Strangers
It's hard for The National to make a really bad song, because Matt Berninger's voice is so awesome, but the songwriting on this one stands out.

    109. Frightened Rabbit - EscucharThe Modern Leper
    An overwhelmingly good track.

    110. Joanna Newsom - EscucharMonkey & Bear
Lyrically, this is Joanna Newsom's most cohesive song. It tells an interesting story, which unlike most of her songs is fairly easy to follow.

    111. Animal Collective - My Girls
Animal Collective: it's not just for hipsters anymore!

    112. Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
I can't decide whether this or White Winter Hymnal is their best song. This is the more complex of the two, though.

    113. The New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour
The vocals on this song are just bursting with joy. It's hard not to smile when you listen to it.

    114. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Youthful idealism tinged with sorrow in the form of a song.

    115. Queens of the Stone Age - EscucharNo One Knows
    That riff!

    116. Radiohead - Nude
I'm just glad that when I google this I don't get pictures of Thom Yorke naked.
("You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking...")

    117. The Decemberists - EscucharO Valencia!
Colin Meloy's voice is always kind of flat, but it's got a certain charm, especially on this song.

    118. Grizzly Bear - On a Neck, On a Spit
These guys sure can write songs. Everything on this song is put together perfectly, but the drumming stands out.

    119. Regina Spektor - EscucharOn the Radio
This song reminds me how great "November Rain" is. Also, it's got some of Regina Spektor's most touching lyrics.

    120. Oceansize - One Day All This Could Be Yours
    Chilling.

    121. Joanna Newsom - EscucharOnly Skin
The best song on the best album of the decade. I can't possibly say enough good things about it.

    122. Oceansize - Ornament/the Last Wrongs
If you only listen to one Oceansize song, make it this one. But really, you should listen to everything they've ever recorded.

    123. Okkervil River - Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe
Yet again, Will Sheff's impassioned vocals make this song.

    124. Audioslave - EscucharOut Of Exile
    Awesome solo.

    125. Hot Chip - EscucharOver And Over
    The joy of repetition.

    126. Björk - EscucharPagan Poetry
One of the best videos of the decade, for one of the best tracks.

    127. of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
Too many good lyrics to list. The 12 minutes go by like 4.

    128. Regina Spektor - Pavlov's Daughter
The best of her early songs, on which her quirkiness really comes through.

    129. Joanna Newsom - EscucharPeach, Plum, Pear
Best harpsichord solo since The Art of the Fugue?

    130. The Shins - Phantom Limb
Well, The Shins didn't change my life, but this is a great song.

    131. Muse - Plug In Baby
Sure, it's just an arpeggio, but I bet you've never come up with a riff this good.

    132. Coldplay - EscucharPolitik
This is from when Coldplay used to write good songs. Ah, those were the days.

    133. Explosions in the Sky - EscucharA Poor Man's Memory
A lot of EITS songs leave me cold, but I really like this (and EscucharHave You Passed Through This Night?).

    134. Ludovico Einaudi - EscucharPrimavera
This is the only classical song on my list - I mean, the 21st century isn't exactly known for its classical music. Einaudi obviously takes a cue from Vivaldi, because you can hear the influence of the cascading strings from the last movement of Summer (not Spring, ironically) on this track.

    135. Animal Collective - EscucharThe Purple Bottle
Animal Collective's lyrics are somehow obtuse and direct at the same time, especially in their love songs: "Sometimes I'm naked and thank God sometimes you're naked, well hello." The last couple minutes of this song are incredible.

    136. The Fiery Furnaces - Quay Cur
This is the first Fiery Furnaces song I heard, and I was hooked after about 30 seconds.

    137. Carla Bruni - EscucharQuelqu'un m'a dit
I'm willing to bet that Michelle Obama couldn't write a song this good.

    138. Bon Iver - Re: Stacks
"This is not the sound of a new man or a crispy realization"

    139. Regina Spektor - Real Love
I don't listen to many covers, and this is the only one on my list. But damn, the crescendo at the end is soulful.

    140. Mates of State - The Re-Arranger
Again, how am I the only one who really loves Re-Arrange Us?

    141. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
The best song on the album, and it's an amazing album.

    142. Muse - Recess
Most bands would kill to have a bassline like this on an A-side or an album track, let alone a B-side.

    143. Radiohead - EscucharReckoner
Thom Yorke singing "Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore..." gives me goosebumps every time.

    144. The Strokes - EscucharReptilia
Incredibly catchy. This is the song that made me pay attention to the Strokes.

    145. Portishead - The Rip
Haunting. The keyboards and general droniness at the end combine perfectly with Beth Gibbons' vocals.

    146. Akron/Family - River
What an uplifting song. It's even more awesome live, like every Akron/Family song. (Seriously, their live show is like a big party.)

    147. Bright Eyes - Road to Joy
Okay, it's pretty lazy to use Ode to Joy as the basis for a song, but Conor Oberst does magical things with it.

    148. Islands - EscucharRough Gem
This is what cotton candy would be like in the form of music.

    149. The Mars Volta - EscucharRoulette Dares (The Haunt of)
Surprisingly, since De-Loused in the Comatorium is my favourite Mars Volta album, this is the only song from it on my list. The "exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed" refrain is stunning.

    150. Au - EscucharRR vs. D
This sounds like the kind of song WHY? would write, and that's a good thing. It also has pretty much the best use of handclaps in an indie song I've heard.
