Between The Buried And Me fue formado a principios del año 2000 por Tommy Rogers (voz) y Paul Waggoner (guitarra), tras la disolución de su antigua banda Prayer For Cleansing. El resto de la banda se fue yendo completando hasta llegar a una formación estable con Nick Fletcher como guitarrista, Jason King como bajista (ambos componentes del grupo Azazel) y Mark Castillo como batería (del grupo Bury Your Dead). El nombre de la banda proviene de una sección de la letra «Ghost Train» de la banda Counting Crows.
Rápidamente consiguieron un contrato discográfico con el sello alemán Lifeforce Records, con el que vieron editado su debut homónimo (Between The Buried And Me) en el año 2002 y con el que pudieron sacar a relucir todas sus influencias, que iban desde los Smashing Pumpkins hasta Dream Theater, todo ello con unas bases muy cercanas al Metalcore y al Death Metal. Además, con este primer disco, Between The Buried And Me consiguieron unas grandes alabanzas por parte de la escena underground y también girar con grupos como Poison the Well o Hatebreed y participar en el Hellfest de ese mismo año. Fruto de este relativo éxito consiguieron fichar por uno de los sellos más importantes del hardcore: Victory Records.
Así, en Agosto del 2003, se pusieron manos a la obra para empezar a grabar lo que sería su nuevo y segundo disco con el afamado productor Matthew Ellard (participe del «Jane Doe» de Converge) que finalmente fue lanzado en ese mismo año bajo el nombre de «The Silent Circus».
