  • My Favourite albums of 2009

    15 Dic 2009, 3:00 de neonbedlite

I listened to tons of different stuff the past 12 months, as usual catching up on albums released the previous year and beyond so these don't really reflect ALL my favourites; these are the albums I loved the most that I bought and were released in 2009. I know it's a bit fucking lame to gush about a bunch of albums I loved (and most people didn't haha) but hey, if anyone reads this and enjoys one of them then that's well worth it in my book. I'd love to hear what your favourites have been too.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart- Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
This was the best recommendation I recieved this year. Hardly original, this album is poppy early 90's shoegaze but fuck me if it isn't better than anything from that era. I listened to this non stop all year since it's release in Feburary, never once got tired of it and still haven't.
Favourite track - A Teenager In Love

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns
I liked the first album but this blew the shit out of me. I can't even remember how I got so into this, must have been from hearing Daniel somewhere when it was released on single. Got tickets to see her at the Forum and got listening to the album properly. I love the otherworldly feel about it, the lyrics too. Perfect dream pop, spun it all year long. Show at the Roundhouse was amazing too.
    Favourite track - Siren Song.

    Beware of Safety - Dogs
Heard this playing in a record shop in Birmingham and had to buy it there and then, I knew I was gonna love it after 10 seconds.
I've seen this described as prog but I never heard it like that. It's post rock but with more emphasis on the rock than the quiet bits. This grew and grew and grew and the power of it still blows me away.
Favourite track - Yards And Yards

    A Camp - Colonia
The Mark Linkous produced Debut A Camp album is one of my favourite albums of all time and I was dubious of this after hearing he wasn't on board. This new album seems so far removed from the country tinged first but that was 8 years ago after all. This is leaning more towards The Cardigans most recent work, accomplished, solidly crafted pop. First single Stronger Than Jesus was the first track I heard, and I knew I was going to love it (the video is class too). Lyrically, I feel this is Nina Persson's best work to date.
Favourite track - Love Has Left The Room

    Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I've liked their previous albums but this is my favourite of theirs to date. I bought this during a big summer spending spree, listened to it once then got caught up listening to tons of other stuff. I went back to it about a month later and couldn't believe I'd neglected it.
Well, well catchy, really warm production, I can't listen to it and sit still.
At 35 minutes it's short, but it's worth it as there's no filler.
Favourite track - 1901 (That moog on 1.16! amazing!)

Hed Kandi - Nu Disco -VA
I used to love the disco heavens years ago then the started going downhill when the fella who run it left and admittidly I'd given up on the label out of boredom. This was right up my street though, 2 discs of future retro. Fred Falke, Alan Braxe, Lifelike...was this actually compiled with me in mind? First discovered Phonat here too. Played to death.
Favourite track - Relation - Your Tiny Mind (Lifelike remix)

    Japandroids - Post-Nothing
Bought this after looking at the cover, sometimes you just know don't you. Brilliant fuzzed out pop rock (also with a huge nod to the 90's), it just sounds like 2 geezers fucking enjoying themselves. Great lyrics too -"These girls are all Bikini Kill/We need a ride to Bikini Island"
Favourite track - Young Hearts Spark Fire

    LTJ Bukem - Fabriclive
There's been some great drum & bass releases from Fabric the past couple of years (High Contrast, Marcus Intalex) but you listen to this and it can only be LTJ Bukem. The mix is fucking DEEEEP, it's a masterclass. Got lost in this alot on long journeys to the midlands this summer.
Favourite track - Inflated Tear - Villem

Richmond Fontaine - We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River
Business as usual for My Favourite Band On Earth, and maybe that's why it's not higher. Wonderful panoramic americana again, though Willy goes for a different kind of approach vocally on some tracks, I prefer him in story telling-voice-mode. Didn't stop me listening to it solidly though. Doubt I could ever dislike something they'd produce.
Favourite track - A Letter To The Patron Saint Of Nurses

    Converge - Axe To Fall
Ok this is kind of cheating as I only heard it for the first time yesterday but I'm so excited I had to include it. In 2001, Jane Doe changed the way I listened to music and is still in my top 5 albums of all time. Both albums since then didn't come anywhere close so I wasn't exactly rushing to listen to this when it came out. Yesterday though, I heard Dark Horse and it stripped my faaaaaacking face off. Although this album is a lot different (they've turned up the thrash to 11), it's brilliant and a long overdue return to form.
    Favourite track - Dark Horse

Other albums I enjoyed this year -

Hanne Hukkelberg - Blood from a Stone - Same as usual, bit more accessible though. Midnight Sun Dream got a LOT of plays. Good artwork too, appeals.

Jonsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps - GORGEOUS. Read a lot to this.

Tegan & Sara - Sainthood - Same with Richmond Fontaine, business as usual. Poppier than The Con, but not as good.

Mocky - Saskamodie - Niiiice lounge. Sleepy Time went on a lot of playlists.

The Low Anthem - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin - Was hoping I'd like this more, the pretty tracks are amazing (especially Ticket Taker), upbeat tracks, not so much.

Whispertown 2000 - Swim - I could still get into this deeper, No Dope got the listen-to-it-twenty-times-in-row treatment.

    Vitalic - Flashmob
Only really decent electronica album released this year that I liked I think, not been in the mood to listen to it much though. Work in progress.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz
Never been massively into them but Hysteric is one of my favourite tracks of the year.

There's probably albums I've forgotten but whatcha gonna do.

  • 2009 – A Year in Review

    14 Dic 2009, 21:47 de warrenwheel

This year, particularly in music, was an odd year for me. The first half of the year was dominated by electronic music, whether it be electro-rock, airy dream-pop tunes, or retro lo-fi synth-pop. I finally attended the Ultra Music Festival after years of wishing that I could go. The festival was a great time and Miami is a fantastic city. The second half of the year involved a major shift to indie rock, freak folk, shoegaze, and post rock. While I still listened to electronic-influenced music, it was mostly combined with indie elements. This shift was likely a result of getting a radio playlist show on Indiespot on Metaphoric (check out my main page for information), which has me consistently looking for brand new alternative and indie tunes and artists. Fun times…but without further ado, here is my 2009 Year in Review.

To make the top albums list somewhat easier for myself, I’m going to split my list into an overall top list and a more electronic-focused list. It seems to be the only way I can manage to figure this out.

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Bat For Lashes is a pseudonym for the Pakistan-born British singer-songwriter Natasha Khan; a talented young woman, who’s been one of the most enticing discoveries for me this year. Her ethereal voice carries qualities reminiscent of Enya, Björk and Tori Amos. She is also someone who understands the meaning of music as an art of storytelling. And communicating your emotions via metaphors. The trick with this is to know what you're doing; once you do it wrong, it's stupid, but when you're good at it, it's ingenius. Music is so dumbed down nowadays that the term "concept album" makes people go: "Omg! Who does she think she is, trying to be smart? She's pretentious!". Bullshit. This is what music is supposed to be – ambitious and creative, not dragged down to the lowest common denominator.

Ok, lemme unravel the "plot" of this album song by song, for the slow-minded folk. Two Suns is a thematic album that deals with the dual nature of ourselves and our existence. Basically, it relies on the metaphysical principle of yin and yang - light and dark, good and evil, love and pain, male and female, etc. If you're familiar with fairy tales or myths, the lyrical content shouldn't be overly difficult to grasp. She's not reinventing the wheel in here.

Glass... This booming opening number is about her quest for her soulmate, "a knight in crystal armor", but "when two suns are shining, the battle becomes blinding" - relationships are not easy to maintain; "but we ride tonight / tonight, tonight we ride" - each moment together counts.
EscucharSleep Alone... a pretty straightforward song about loneliness and the comfort offered by a lover in her dreams (later on she reveals his name).

EscucharMoon And Moon... explores the idea of "genderbendering". "I’d be boy and you'd be girl", "calling moon and moon" - two opposites become each other, the essence of androgyny.
EscucharDaniel... is about escaping your nightmares to find safety in the arms of your lover (who may or may not be Karate Kid, haha). The most gorgeous song on the album. Stylistically, it’s like a fantasy that transports you through time right into the 80’s.
EscucharPeace Of Mind... speaks about reaching a zen-like state within yourself; a higher, calmer level of being. Rise above your troubles, rise above your fears, conquer that side of yourself.
EscucharSiren Song... the temptation to succumb to her dark alter ego – the "femme fatale" figure (whom she calls Pearl) - is the most prevalent in this one.
EscucharPearl's Dream... Pearl and her desires become more ambiguous, she becomes attracted to innocence and light. "You know that it's time to go up, up, up, up, up... had a big machine riding your shoulders."
EscucharGood Love... talks about being torn between self-destructive tendencies (passion, jealousy) in a relationship and the yearning to hold on to a healthy relationship and how these two aspects are not always easy to separate from one another.

EscucharTwo Planets... she again uses mythical motives to illustrate how life consists of two opposing forces - "day cannot exist without a night", - and how we all are the universe and the universe is us.
EscucharTravelling Woman... a journey to self-realization.
EscucharThe Big Sleep... come on, do I really have to explain this one?

If people bothered to think a little or use their imagination more, the wonderful works of art we have would be rated accordingly.

    9/10

    LYRICS:

Daniel, when I first saw you
I knew that you had a flame in your heart
    And under wild blue skies
    Marble movie skies
I found a home in your eyes
    We'll never be apart

    And when the fires came
The smell of cinders and rain
    Perfumed almost everything
We laughed and laughed and laughed

    And in the golden blue
    Car you took me to
    The darkest place you knew
And set fire to my heart

When I run in the dark, Daniel
To a place that's lost, Daniel
Under a sheet of rain in my heart, Daniel
    I dream of home

    But in a goodbye bed
With my arms around your neck
Into our mouths the tears crept
Just kids in the eye of the storm

And as my head spun round
My dreams pulled me from the ground
Forever to search for the flame
    For home again
    For home again

When I run in the dark, Daniel
To a place that's lost, Daniel
Under a sheet of rain in my heart, Daniel
    I dream of home

  • Favourites of 2009

    14 Dic 2009, 16:14 de Rozzen

    Albums:
    La Roux - La Roux

    Favourite Track: EscucharTigerlily
Maybe you have to adore 80s synthpop as much as me to fully appreciate this album but GOD it's an 80s revival masterpiece, even thought it took about 6 listens to realise that. I give the first 6 tracks all 100/5 stars and the last 6 5/5. Who cares if Elly is a cunt?

La Roux is my ultimate favourite of the year which is why it's placed #1st, the rest of this list is in alaphabetical order by artist (according to my WMP 2009 list)

    Air - Love 2

Favourite Track: EscucharSo Light Is Her Footfall
It reminds me of Moon Safari/The Virgin Suicides Air which is great, tons of cute heavily accented English in it which I also adore. Perfect album for falling to sleep to as per usual with Air.

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

    Favourite Track: EscucharDaniel
Not as good as Kate Bush

    Breathe Carolina - Hello Fascination

Favourite Track: EscucharI'm The Type Of Person To Take It Personal
So I hate everything about emo/screamo vocals but the music's so good I'll let it slip; there's only a tiny amount of screaming anyway and it doesn't bother me

    Frankmusik - Complete Me

    Favourite Track: EscucharWhen You're Around
His lisp is adorable really omg. It's a shame the best song on the album (by far) is a cover, kind of.

Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster

    Favourite Tracks: EscucharBad Romance, EscucharAlejandro
I used to be a h8a. I saw the errors of my ways when the single of the year was released.

Brown Eyes is 100 times better than Speechless though FYI.

Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

    Favourite Track: Kabul Shit
Every song is good except for Who'd Have Known

    Little Boots - Hands

    Favourite Track: EscucharStuck On Repeat
It's an all killer no filler album but her voice is grating

    Madonna - Celebration

Favourite Track: It's a best of by Madonna anybody who attempts to answer this is genuinely insane
    No surprises here

    Meg - BEAUTIFUL

    Favourite Track: JOKER
    MEG IS BEAUTIFUL

    m.o.v.e - Humanizer

    Favourite Track: Kiss Me Now
Thank god they've finally moved on from that god awful rock sound.
Sexy electronic album with some eurobeat and 90s inspired toons

    Muse - The Resistance

    Favourite Track: MK Ultra
This album is actually really really really terrible for a Muse album, it doesn't stand up to anything that came before it even slightly. MUSE ARE AN AMAZING BAND THOUGH SO OBVIOUSLY THAT MEANS IT'S ATLEAST DECENT A DECENT ALBUM. I absolutely love 5 of the 11 tracks, the other 6 are terribly boring.

    Patrick Wolf - The Bachelor

    Favourite Track: EscucharVulture
Bit of an obnoxious twat twho happens to have great music

    Perfume - ⊿

Favourite Track: EscucharI still love U
It's so good that I think I consider it to be my favourite Nakata release, ever.
#2 favourite Japanese album of the year

    Rihanna - Rated R

    Favourite Track: EscucharRussian Roulette
Who would of thought it possible that Rihanna could release a genuinely great album

    Röyksopp - Junior

Favourite Tracks: EscucharThe Girl And The Robot, EscucharIt's What I Want

    ルルティア - Seirios

    Favourite Track: EscucharSeirios
This is an extremely beautiful album, kinda Björkish

    安室奈美恵 - PAST<FUTURE

    Favourite Track: FAST CAR
There is only 2 tracks I'm not fond of (FIRST TIMER & Shut Up) but the rest is damn good and it ranks my #3 Japanese album of the year along with NEXT LEVEL

    椎名林檎 - 三文ゴシップ

    Favourite Track: 尖った手口
#1 Japanese album of the year
If you don't already listen to Shiina Ringo (you're wasting your ability to hear) then this is a great starting point because it's more accessible than her older albums. Not anyway near as good as SS or KZK though, 2 of my favourite albums ever - but it's impossible for any albums to ever top them for me probably..

    浜崎あゆみ - NEXT LEVEL

    Favourite Track: EscucharSparkle
I have high expectations for Ayu albums so I refer to this as awful all the time but after quite a few listens it's not THAT bad compared to most other J-Pop - I don't really hate any of the songs on it so it ranks #3 along with PAST<FUTURE for Japanese album of the year. Still her worst album.

    Singles:

Incredible song made to be the theme song for Final Fantasy XIII yet it's being replaced for the European/American release by none other than Leona Lewis?! My Hands by Leona is a great song but this is infinitely better. HOPEFULLY My Hands will be replacing the insert song Eternal Love and not 君がいるから.

  • How varied is your music taste?

    13 Dic 2009, 20:27 de GreteizzzexyX

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.
