Bane empezó como un proycto paralelo entre Aaron Dalbec (Converge) y Damon Bellardo. Aaron le propuso cantar a Matt Firestone y tocaron bajo el nombre de Gateway por un par de shows, antes de que Firestone partiera para enfocarse en otros proyectos. Delbec habló con Aaron Bedard (quien había cantado anteriormente en Backbone) para cantar para Bane. Fueron al estudio en diciembre de 1995 con unos amigos y grabaron un demo con 5 canciones. El año siguiente lanzaron su primer EP, e hicieron muchos shows en Massachusetts. En primavera de 1997 salió Free To Think, Free To Be EP, y 1998 vió el lanzamiento del Holding This Moment 7» y CD collection, más su primer tour en Estados Unidos. Bane puede ser clasificado como una banda hardcore punk de Worcester que es conocida por su energía, himnos, honestidad y promoción de la tolerancia y unidad entre la escena hardcore.
