Two members of Soft Machine, two of Japan’s greatest rock musicians, two long improvisations that blow most other music out of the water.

    7. Akron/Family - Love is Simple
These guys do whatever the hell they want, and it’s usually pretty awesome.

If you have any recommendations for next week, give me a shout.

  • This week in eMusic - 4/02/07 to 4/08/07

    9 Abr 2007, 23:26 de Thunderfoot

So, anonymous lurkers of the Internet, here's my first ever journal entry on last.fm. It's partly to parse the increasingly huge volume of tracks I'll be getting (I upgraded to 200/month) and partly to get recommendations on more music that I could download from dear sweet eMusic. Sort of a perpetual motion machine. So here's this week in rawk:

Tipsy - Trip Tease – I’m a big fan of space age lounge and kitchtronica, so this is exactly right. A bunch of hipsters threw their old Esquivel, Martin Denny, and Les Baxter into a blender and then played along to the result. It’s got more kick than your average easy listening exotica, kind of a danceable and funky remix. Think Ursula 1000 after a pot of coffee.

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra – Security – Here’s a bit of a change for the New York afrobeat ensemble. Not quite as driving, but more experimental. We’ve got John McEntire of Tortoise to blame/thank. You can really hear the Tortesian influence on the sound of this album. There are some moments on this album where I wonder what the fuck they were thinking as rhythm lines never quite meet and mesh. Other times I remember what I love about both bands simultaneously. The car crash works more than it doesn’t. Is this Antibalas going post-rock? Not entirely, and let’s hope they keep biting Fela Kuti’s lines, even as they evolve their own sound.

Various Artists – Dance Music from China and Malaysia – Like I said, I’m a sucker for kitsch. And these lost Chinese and Malaysian bands play the kitschiest of American instrumental music. Think garage-a-gogo type stuff from the 50s and 60s. There’s groovy covers of the Fistful of Dollars theme and the whistling tune from Bridge Over the River Kwai. You know what I’m talking about. And all of it is instrumental. Break out the dubbed Laugh-In reruns and get to grooving, man.

Baby Grandmothers – Baby Grandmothers – Swedish psychedic rawk from 1967. And it’s awesome. Long, spacebrained jams and fuzzed out heaviness. What is it about Scandinavia that produces good heavy stuff? Some of my favorite stoner rock comes from the fjords, and now I find this buried treasure that speaks in the same accent. Anyway, if wasn’t a strong supporter of the good foot method of living, this album would be ace with blacklights and bonghits.

Holy retro week, Batman. Everything I gots is either pre-disco or steals from somebody who is (though Fela is pushing it). Next week, more of the same? Who knows? Who cares?
