Kathy Bjelland pasó sus años de instituto en Oregon, junto a su amiga de juventud, Courtney Love (HOLE) deciden escapar de un ambiente opresivo e instalarse en la «capital» hippy San Francisco. Allí junto a Jennifer Finch (que formaría parte luego de L7 hasta el 96) forman su primera banda de punk bajo el nombre SUGAR BABY DOLL, inspiradas en las veteranas bandas de chicas. Graban un minilp «The Quiet Room» y ambas, Kathy y Courtney se mueven a Minneapolis. Ambas acuñan entonces un concepto que quieren asociar a su música, música PUNK ROCK y actitud de lucha por las mujeres, aunque no exactamente feminismo = GIRL POWER, años más tarde las Spice Girl´s ¿?lo recogerían como suyo, aunque con planteamientos evidentemente diferentes.
Allí conocerán a Lori Barbero, su trabajo en alguno de los clubs más emblemáticos de la ciudad «UPTOWN» o «1st AVENUE» la hacia estar en contacto con músicos de primera fila como Prince, Michel Stipe de REM o los miembros de SOUL ASYLUM ,aunque sus aspiraciones musicales pasaban por formar una banda de chicas que hiciera música «altamente excitante»

trackaghost: yeah, the term 'riot grrrl' was coined from the Hanna (Bikini Kill)/Woolfe (Bratmobile) zines. infinitegames: I've already explained that Riot Grrrl focuses on political female issues, ergo it is not grunge. Men are as able to make Riot Grrrl as women are. The fact that you don't know that suggests you need to go and read up a bit before you start branding musicians as sexist when they're the very opposite of it.
