  • My Albums of 2009 with My Wishlist and a few other things by Me

    20 Dic 2009, 14:30 de BlackCoffeeDuck

Well the year is almost over again and everyone is making lists of albums of 2009 so I'm going to too. This year I'm going do a top ten of My Albums which are the ones which I've went out and bought the real thing that you can hold in your hands. No downloads here if I couldn't be bother to find the CD it's not really here in front of me now so call me old fashioned. Also I'm going to do My Wishlist of this year which is CD's I haven't got but if someone needs a Christmas present or ten. Plus a few other things which I think I'll start with now.

    TRACK OF THE YEAR:
    The Drones
    Suicide is Painless
I've been waiting for this for a long time now. I don't know how many times I've watched the video for this song on JTV, it's a Triple J radio's Like A Version cover song. Volume five has just come out and I went out and got the CD just for this track, is that mad? It's got some of the most bleak and depressing lyrics ever written but The Drones members are laughing at them throughout the song which kind-off juxtaposed it. I've written a whole journal about this track earlier so have a look in my older posts if you want to know more.

    EP OF THE YEAR:
    Magic Dirt
    White Boy EP
This EP was released after the passing away of Dean Turner which is the saddest news of the year because he was so young still, only 37. Dean was a founding member, bass player and their producer. Recording these last tracks which ended up being his last before he passed away Friday August 21st, 2009 and a statement from band said: "For nine years, Dean battled an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer called dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)... Being a very private man, Dean chose to fight the cancer in a quiet and dignified manner. He displayed great courage and incredible stoicism. And above all else he had an unshakeable positive attitude throughout his long ordeal. White Boy is from their last album. Two duets: Summer High (featuring Rowland S. Howard) and Love Is The Armour (featuring Gareth Liddiard), deep in a net of red, valley of the rose plus the epic ten minute last song Future Fuck.

    REISSUE OF THE YEAR:
    Beasts of Bourbon
Box Set with the first three albums: The Axemans Jazz, Sour Mash and Black Milk
Finally you can get these albums on CD, they were deleted forever and these three albums are their best by far. The original line-up of Kim Salmon and Spencer P. Jones on guitars, James Baker on drums, Boris Sujdovic on bass and Tex Perkins on vocals. The little booklet that comes with the box is very cool too with a lot old photos which I haven't seen before and liner notes by all the band members, not some music critics talking wank.

    DVD OF THE YEAR:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Your Funeral... My Trial (2009 Digital Remaster) Do You Love Me Like I Love You (Part 4) by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard
I really hate music documentary DVDs most of the time and just can't sit through them most of the time. But these talking heads and how it's filmed and edited together is really, really, really cool. Warren Ellis also says this is his favourite Bad Seeds album and I have to agree with him. To have a new copy of it is great is wicked too because my old one is totally falling apart so beaten up.

    SOUNDTRACK OF THE YEAR:
    Various Artists
    Palermo Shooting
A new film by Wim Wenders which I haven't seen. It's got new Grinderman, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Matt Sweeney, Sibylle Baier tracks. Original score by Irmin Schmidt plus tracks by Portishead, Iron & Wine, Calexico, Velvet Underground, Beirut, Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man and more, well, 21 tracks in total. Wim Wender has written the liner notes as an A to Z thing with just over 30 pages.

    LIVE ACT OF THE YEAR:
    The Drones
Seeing them twice this year as a full band and then seeing Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe playing acoustic too. These where unbelievable shows and I can't wait for the next time they come to town. Havilah winning my 2008 album of the year and now if you buy it you get a bonus disc of Live At The Hi-Fi which I downloaded because I wasn't going to buy the same CD twice but it a great live album so I do wish I had the real thing. The Drones are already starting to working on a new album.

    MUSIC BOOK OF THE YEAR:
    David McComb & The Triffids
Edited by Chris Coughran & Niall Lucy
A truly great book about one of the best Australian singer-songwriters and rock groups with all sorts of different writing styles, old color and black & white photos, drawings by Martyn P. Casey, and more all on beautiful gloss paper. This would have to be by far the best music book of the year. Nothing would be close to this and could be one of the best music books ever really. Check it out here: http://www.fremantlepress.com.au/books/currentaffairs_culture_social_history/1104

    RE-RECORDING OF THE YEAR:
    Warren Fahey
Australia Folk Songs and Bush Verse: Bushrangers, Bolters and Other Wild Colonials
Well I think I have to explain this one a bit. This is new recording of very, very old traditional Aussie tracks. There are more themed discs in this series, or you can get two box sets of all of them but this is the only one I got, if you want more info have a look here: http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=304626&SearchID=2382722&SearchRefineID=4902015 I think re-recording is the best thing to call this album plus he hasn't gone too far from the old arangements of how these songs would have been played two or one hundred years ago.

    WISHLIST OF THE YEAR:
    TEN
    Warren Fahey
Australia Folk Songs and Bush Verse: Rare Convict Ballads and Broadsides

The other album I would like from the above series.
    NINE
    The Blackeyed Susans
    Reveal Yourself
Three CDs and DVD box set from a great but mostly forgotten Aussie band.
    EIGHT
    Rihanna
    Rated R
The best pop album of the year.
    SEVEN
    Animal Collective
    Merriweather Post Pavilion
The best album cover of the year and the music is pretty wicked too.
    SIX
    Kasabian
    West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
The best British rock group of the year.
    FIVE
    The Flaming Lips
    Embryonic
The best American rock group of the year.
    FOUR
    Tinariwen
    Imidiwan
The best African rock group or World music of the year.
    THREE
    Beak>
    Beak>
The best side project band comes from Geoff Barrow of the legendary Portishead.
    TWO
    Fever Ray
    Fever Ray
The best electronic artist of the year. The best Nick Cave cover with Stranger Than Kindness which is on the updated version of the album from early this year but I have yet to see it.
    ONE
    Rowland S. Howard
    Pop Crimes
Rowland S. Howard first album in ten years so I really should have this already. Early this month, Howard admitted that he has had liver cancer for awhile and is now awaiting a transplant so wishing you to get well soon Rowland.

    VIDEO CLIP OF THE YEAR:
    Bob Dylan
    Must Be Santa
It's the week of Christmas but this is so funny, Bob in silly hats and a wig, dancing a polka, standing next to Santa Claus at the end and he re-names the reindeers after Presidents of the United States if you listen carefully. This is the best track on the album, maybe The Christmas Blues is the other cool one or should I say the song I like best. It's directed by an Aussie guy called Nash Edgerton.

    ALBUMS OF THE YEAR:
    TEN
    Bob Dylan
    Together Through Life
Coming at the tail end of my top ten this is the other Dylan album and not his Christmas one. Really not as good as his three previous ones but those are some of his best ever albums so it would be hard follow them. Most of it was written with Robert Hunter. The best track is This Dream of You is Bob's only "solo" song on this album but the whole thing is not bad for a 68 year old.
    NINE
    Marianne Faithfull
    Easy Come Easy Go
I love a good cover songs album. Who else but Marianne Faithfull could get Cat Power, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright and Keith Richards to sing backing vocals. She sings two real duets with Antony on EscucharOoh Baby Baby and Somewhere with Jarvis Cocker. My favourite track is the classic Neko Case song EscucharHold On Hold On but this cover has Warren Ellis playing an epic electric violin solo at the end.
    EIGHT
    Various Artists
    The Rockwiz Duets Volume 3
Another great cover album full of duets this time from the Aussie TV show. With tracks like Adalita & Gareth Liddiard doing The Saints' Messin' With The Kid, Amanda Brown & Glenn Richards doing Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood's Some Velvet Morning, Patience Hodgson & Broderick Smith doing MGMT's Time To Pretend, Eve Von Bibra & Jed Kurzel doing The Bee Gees' To Love Somebody, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson doing Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head, Sophie Koh & Steve Kilbey doing The Go-Betweens' Streets Of Your Town and so many more.
    SEVEN
    Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
    White Lunar
I love Nick Cave & Warren Ellis but one disc of new stuff, another disc of tracks I've already got. And now The Road soundtrack which is coming soon or you can download now. They are really pushing it at the moment and Cave publishing his very silly dirty jokes book this year too. Dirty Three are touring soon and still hoping for a new Dirty Three album but it sounds like it's going to be a new Grinderman one. All the bitching to one side the second disc is some of the best music they have both done and by far the best thing Cave has done this year.
    SIX
    Titus Andronicus
    The Airing Of Grievances
The best newcomer of the year goes to these guys and this is the best debut album in a long time. This was recorded in 2008 but not released here in Australia until the beginning of year. With The Monitor, the band's follow-up to The Airing of Grievances, will be out on March 9 which I hope that is here too and I don't have wait a year or something. According to singer Patrick Stickles in a press release, the LP is "sort of" a concept album about the Civil War: "It doesn't take place in olden times, nor does it necessarily feature any characters that participated in that conflict. Really, it is a record about how the conflicts that led our nation into that great calamity remain unresolved, and the effect that this ongoing division has on our personal relationships and our behavior and how they're all out to get us (or maybe not?) and yadda yadda yadda."
    FIVE
    Laughing Clowns
    Laughing Clowns Live
I love a great live album and this is the second one here, the first was the Rockwiz album. This is the seventh volume in the new prince melon bootleg series. If you didn't know Prince Melon is a nickname Ken West gave Laughing Clowns back in the late 70's and early 80's when they were around the first time, this is a reunion tour album. Ken West is now one of the men who runs something called The Big Day Out tour but his first job in the music business was manager, door man, lighting guy and all rounder for Laughing Clowns. It's a pity they're not on this years line-up and it's more of a pity that they're not coming over to Perth, but the best reunion band of the year is Laughing Clowns.
    FOUR
    The Mess Hall
    For The Birds
This band has always been in the shadow of The White Stripes like the Aussie version but with this album and latter turning into a very pricey DVD side project and one of the many novelty for Jack White. After The Mess Hall winning a lot of award money from their last album Devils Elbow which payed for time and space to do this one which is even better and by far the best thing they have done and taking the two piece band format above and beyond anything that has been done before and others will now have to keep up with these guys, the best band of the year.
    THREE
    Bill Callahan
Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
Bill Callahan was called Smog for years and years but went "solo" a couple of years ago and now has painted his masterpiece on his 13th album. From the beginning to the end this is one of the most beautiful and wonderful albums. Him adding the strings is a great addition, so my male artist of 2009 is Bill Callahan.
    TWO
    Sarah Blasko
    As Day Follows Night
What can I possibly say about Sarah Blasko's As Day Follows Night album that has not been said before now. More perfect that her last and grows more and more with each listen. She has painted her masterpiece on this only her 3rd album. From the beginning to the end is totally breathless record, so my female artist of 2009 is Sarah Blasko.
    ONE
    Tom Waits
    Glitter And Doom Live
I don't know if anyone else would name a live album as their album of the year but it's Tom Waits. Maybe he wins by default because this is the last album I bought. Anyway the reason is I would love to see him live and I have no hope of him coming here. This is brilliant and wicked so it would be unbelievable to see him live and this is most likely the closest I'll ever get. Better that his two other live albums 1988's Big Time and 1975's Nighthawks at the Diner and with Tom Tales a 1/2 an hour long track as a bonus disc which is classic in it's own right, he could be the best stand-up of the year. So my album of the year is Tom Waits' Glitter And Doom Live.

P.S. I don't know if you heard this but someone called Michael Jackson died this year too.

  • Best Things to Happen to Music in 2009

    20 Dic 2009, 5:14 de gregryalf

    15. Rain Fests
Lolla, APW got a ton of rain, and yet nothing was cancelled. A few acts were delayed, and weren't able to play, but the show went on. Mud fights were endless. Tons of fun, the way it should be.

    14. U2 makes one of their best albums, don't get nominated for any top-honor Grammys

Because I hate the Grammys but loved No Line On The Horizon.

    13. Dirty Projectors are Accessible

Acapella rock never sounded so good, and Dirty Projectors, with their release of Bitte Orca, made my year as one of the best artists. Weirdest thing ever, but extremely listenable, and I believe when the word got out, they became loved by most people who listened.

    12. Indie NSFW
Thank you Girls and The Flaming Lips, you both had great years, but did you have to display you and your friends junk to the internet? It's because of you I know what NSFW stands for. Congrats.

    11. M.I.A.; Mommy In Action

The Grammys & The Academy Awards? You were just making beats with Diplo when I met you, and now you've taken over the world. I couldn't be happier.

    10. Merriweather Post Pavillion

Best album of the year? Probably for a lot of people, but Animal Collective have really made their classic album. And it sports the best cover of the year, too. Just stare.

    9. Single Ladies

I'ma letchu finish, but Beyoncé really did have one of the best videos of all time. And apparently the most inspiring of the year.

    8. Grizzly Bear, #8 on Billboard

Veckatimest blew up, proof that they had a ton of fans and a lot of hype. It's also their best album, so well done.

    7. Jay-Z Murders Autotune

D.O.A. itself is massive, but what Jay-Z has done is make sure we all know who the king of hip-hop is, and at the same time, remember that the genre can continue to grow without selling out.

    6. Radiohead vs. Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, and that guy from Fiery Furnaces

No album released for the biggest band ever, but they stirred up enough controversy, when something like Miley Cyrus got offended because she proclaimed she loved them and they wouldn't present her performance or something? and Kanye West the same thing? and that guy from that band made fun of them for something like being arrogant? Whatever, it was hilarious, because Radiohead would totally beat all these goons in Celebrity Boxing anyway. Wouldn't that be fun to see?

    5. Lady GaGa is a Monster

Her album was released last year, but she blew up in 2009. She's the most innovative and crazy pop artist... of all time? Well, we'll see. But so far it seems promising. She's nuts and we love it.

    4. Jay-Z & Alicia Keyes Perform at Yankee Stadium, Empire State of Mind Becomes Classic

    Yup. A-Rod bobbin his head.

    3. Phoenix is Famous

Finally, a good sounding band that all people can fall in love with. And they're from France. And they're catchy, explorative, and fresh. They've been around of a while, but they really made this year one of the best for me. I can just listen to them all the time...

    2. The Beatles are Hip with the Kids

Paul McCartney did CitiField. The Beatles Rock Band was released. And every Beatles record ever was remixed and sounds better than ever. Best part? I see them on commercials on MTV. It's like they've invaded again.

    1. Jay-Z& Beyoncé show up to a Grizzly Bear Concert
The youtube videos that rocked my world this year involved the same two acts: Jay-Z and Grizzly Bear. Watching Jay-Z sway to Ready, Able at a concert he went to with Beyoncé was the most out-of-place thing this year. And then suddenly it turned into the biggest thing for me this year to appreciate, when I saw Jay-Z interviewed about his attendance, claiming that indie rock now is like what hip-hop was in the 80's. "The Golden Age". He raved about it. And now I'm raving about him raving about it. Awesome. (Oh, and then the band played with the LSO. Nuff Said.)

  • 2009 lists, yo.

    20 Dic 2009, 0:40 de AngleUponAngles

2009. A.k.a the year of the Ox, a.k.a Animal Collective Vs. Grizzly Bear. 2009 was filled with albums teetering on the low nine mark. It’s been an almost perfect end to the decade, minus the sad, sad news about The Shins.

There might be random albums I haven't wrote about but I'm tired, bored and sick of this list now.

So here it is: Top Albums Of 2009. In Ol' Pitchfork fashion I've rated them, for your pleasure ;)

    30. Wild Beasts - Two Dancers 8.1

The first of only two English artists on the entire list. Arh, well. First heard of these couple o' years back when they wasn't that good. Didn't expect they'd release an album like this. Outstanding.

    29. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career 8.3

Catchy. As. Fuck. Is all I have to say about this album. Oh and it's probably their best album to date.

    28. St. Vincent - Actor 8.1

This is such a godamn brilliant album, but I can't stress enough how much more amazing her debut is compared to this.

    27. Woods - Songs Of Shame 8.2

Was put off by this album for a while after listening to Wavves and hearing it was similar. But, Woods is good!

    26. Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue 8.3

    25. Dodos- Time To Die 8.0

    24. Taken By Trees - East Of Eden 8.0

    23. Dan Deacon - Bromst 8.2

    22. Built to Spill - There Is No Enemy 8.2

21.Bill Callahan - Sometimes I wish We Were An Eagle 8.3

It’s always fun to make up words, that’s why Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle is so good. Callahan and his country, folky heart is on display from the very first song right to the very end.

    20. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns 8.3

Disappointingly not as weird as you’d think in real life, Natasha Khan’s at the peak of her creativeness in Two Suns. The lead off song, Daniel is one of the greatest songs of the decade. The album flows naturally, from one potential single to the next.

    19. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca 8.1

Admittedly, I find any pre-Bitte Orca DP album unlistenable, but both instrumentally and vocally, this is one of the most well crafted albums of 2009. Up there with Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest, this is Dirty Projector’s breakthrough album.

    18. Mos Def - The Ecstatic 8.2

Mos Def - Everyone’s favourite black guy, after Morgan Freeman, obviously. Ecstatically sample heavy, this album has already become my favourite rap album. Fuck you, Jay Z.

    17. Beirut - March Of The Zapotec/Realpeople Holland 8.3

The guy with the most unfortunate name in music makes the list with another beautiful release. Here’s to hoping Zach Condon makes more music under the moniker of Realpeople.

    16. The Love Language - The Love Language 8.5

New lo-fi band. But not just any lo-fi band. They don't purposefully make that annoying fuzzy noise that sounds like you're listening to an almost out of range radio station like dicks (looking at you Wavves). Not just that but half of the songs on this, their debut album, are amazing.

    15. Fiery Furnaces - I’m Going Away 8.4

Fiery Furnaces playing… non fucked up music? Huh? What’s up with that shit? This is the most down to earth Fiery Furnaces have ever been. And before listening to this I already knew it wouldn’t be better than their groundbreaking album Blueberry Boat (2004), which was a masterpiece. And how they were gonna follow up Widow City (2007) was beyond me. But this was the last thing I expected.

    14. Various Artists - Dark Was The Night 8.9

This beast of a compilation was produced by that National guy. Every track on the comp has the potential to be the listeners’ favourite song. My personal favourite is Tightrope by Yeasayer. No track from Wavves though, unfortunately.

    13. Girls - Album 8.5

Debut album by four guys from New York. They aren't girls so don't do what I did and expect some lush female vocals because you'll just be dissappionted when you hear a guy moan about not having a boyfriend, pizza or wine. But then turned around 'cos it is actually pretty good. Then after a few more listens it'll be the only thing you'll be listening to. Mega, mega grower, much like that new Wavves album.

    12. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Advanced Based Battery Life/ Vs. Children 8.8/7.9

Owen Ashworth - The King of Lo-Fi? No. That title blates belongs to Wavves. But still, after releasing two terrific albums this year, you gotta hand it to CFTPA’s Owen Ashworth. Nothing ground breaking, just more genuine heartfelt ultra-indie. In my opinion Advanced Based Battery Life is his best collection of songs.

    11. YACHT - See Mystery Lights 8.5

More trippy hippy madness. YACHT, now a duo as opposed to the moniker of single man, Jonathan Warren Bechtolt, have made the best dance album of the year.

    10. JJ - JJ No.2 8.6

You just saw the cover, right? You’re gonna skip this one, right? Wait, wait, this one isn’t about popping caps in bitches. Okay, it’s about drugs, but still. Despite clocking in at a lazy 26 minutes it‘s one of the most compelling albums of the year. It’s a mini masterpiece. DO NOT do what I did and judge this beautiful album by it’s cover and refuse to download it for several months until your friend has told you for the 100th time to stop being so stubborn and get it.

    9. Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer 8.7

Spencer Krug’s “side project” is quickly becoming his main band, having released four Sunset Rubdown albums within the time of just two Wolf Parade albums. Not only that, but SR is arguably better than WP. With Dragonslayer, it picks up where Random Spirit Lover (2007) left off, only not as over-produced. The albums share the same themes and even have sequels. Personally, I think it improves upon Random Spirit Lover. Although not being as good as the Wolf Parade albums or the first two SR records, Dragonslayer is a terrific and captivating album.

    8. Gui Boratto - Take My Breath Away 8.8

    7. Why? - Eskimo Snow 9.1

So there’s no rapping whatsoever on the album. So what? Get over it. Although many Why? Fans would disagree, I think this is their best album and by far the most atmospheric. And is it just me or does anybody else think it sounds Christmassy?

    6. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest 8.8

No surprises here. A massive step up from 2006’s Yellow House (that’s not to say Yellow House wasn’t immense)

    5. Karen O and the Kids - Where The Wild Things Are 9.0

A beautiful album to coincide a beautiful film. One of the greatest albums of the year to soundtrack one of the greatest films of the year. The best thing about this is that it doesn’t sound like just another film score, it sounds like a fully thought out album… and maybe what Fever To Tell (2003) would sound like if Yeah Yeah Yeahs weren’t so aggressive. The Kids include members from Liars, Atlas Sound, YYYs, The Dead Weather (Although TDW are shit if you ask me) and more.

    4. Fever Ray - Fever Ray 9.0

Karin Dreijer Andersson has now totally dumped what made people notice her. Her sunny electronic bleeps and bloops with the knife were nowhere to be seen in Silent Shout (2006), And now her debut under the moniker Fever Ray isn’t only rid of summer anthems but shot of any real emotion. Okay, that sounds bleak and unlistenable but Fever Ray is a great, cohesive album and better than any album by The Knife excluding Silent Shout. And the music videos are incredible.

    3. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion 9.1

I could write about this album forever, the hype behind it, the haters, the lovers, why people consider it to be one of the best of the decade, but all I’m gonna say is - Listen to it! I’d probably class MPP as a masterpiece if the three albums preceding it weren’t better.

    2. The Flaming Lips - Embryonic 9.3

Less commercial than their mega-disappointing last effort, three years later and they’ve returned with their third masterpiece. Granted, it comes in 3rd place awarding Yoshimi(2002) 2nd place and The Soft Bulletin 1st, but still, that’s a tremendous feat. Embryonic is a lot darker than anything they’ve done and a sound more deeper than anything else. You’ll be sucked in to the Flips universe yet again as soon as you hear the super catchy Convinced Of The Hex. Oh, and it’s a double CD. Wayne Coyne is God.

    1. Swan Lake - Enemy Mine 9.4

Dan Bajar’s poetic verses, Spencer Krug’s haunting melodies and Carey Mercer’s majestic yelps all secure Enemy Mine as the finest album of 2009. A masterpiece that includes Bejar and Carey’s best work. Not only that but it’s also a huge surprise taking their shockingly unpleasant, all-over-the-place debut into consideration.

  • The Vessalis Music Award Nominations 2009

    19 Dic 2009, 17:19 de CvaldaVessalis

So, having thrown myself into an unenviable cesspool of music for the last twelve months, I feel some special notices should be handed out to some of the more enjoyable noises to have been made by the premier artists of the year. Especially seeing as the Grammys have seen fit to snub some of the better work to have been released this year (yes, I know the cut-off point was the end of August so most nominees here weren't eligible, but I'm just saying!)... Fuck knows how the BRIT Awards will end up, is all I can say! The Best Album Of The Year and the rest of the award winners I will be announced on New Year's Eve, as a final emotional "Hurrah!" to those responsible for the best music of 2009. • My Favorite Albums of 2009

    19 Dic 2009, 16:50 de Rockstar_Aimz

From my blog: My Aimz is True

What a strong year for music! I've had a hell of a time narrowing down my list this year. Once I got it down to my top 30 albums, it took me forever to parse it down to ten. One thing that I noticed about my particular list is that it really leans heavily towards the country/folk-ish albums. I'm usually a big indie rock geek, but for some reason none of the rock releases that professional critics are lauding this year really did anything for me (e.g. Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, Animal Collective, etc.). Does this mean that I am getting old and I subconsciously don't want to listen to what the damn hipster kids are into? Am I turning introspective and listening to music that more closely resembles the calamity that is my life? Would I feel the same had Okkervil River put out an album this year? Hmmm....

This list also leans towards artists that I saw live this year, and I have tried to reference back to their show somewhere in my review of that album. This system is probably not fair to the artists that I didn't see this year, but what can I do? I see an enormous number of shows every year, and if an artist/band doesn't get his/her/there ass(es) to Toronto, its not my fault.

Any of these top ten can rotate to the top of the list at any given time, but on this day, in the year of our lord two thousand and nine, these are my ten favorites.

    1. Justin Townes Earle - Midnight At The Movies

Justin Townes Earle knows his country music history. Hell, given his middle name and surname, he's lived part of this history. Which is one of the reasons why Midnight at the Movies is so special. JTE, while acutely aware of his family legacy, writes songs that are uniquely his. In fact, many of these songs have so much classic country character that they sound like they could have been written by A.P. Carter. The instrumentation is almost all acoustic, and mixes classic country, bluegrass, blues, folk, and even a bit of rock. And in true classic country style, JTE loves to tell stories in his music. The title track tells of a lonely soul waiting in the dark movie theatre for a few hours of affection from his mystery ladyfriend. Mama's Eyes may be JTE's most poignant song, describing his difficult relationship with his father, while acknowledging that he's also his mother's son. "Sure it hurts but, it should hurt sometimes." What a great lyric for anyone who has even had issues with their parents. Forgiven for This describes the disintegration of a relationship with the narrator hoping for eventual absolution. And every great country album needs a song about folk legend John Henry. Dirty Rag is a short bluegrass instrumental that sounds like it could have been written by The Sadies. The harmonica part on Halfway To Jackson really makes you feel like you are listening to a train chug by. But then JTE pulls a fast one on us with a brilliant country-fied cover of the Replacements Can't Hardly Wait. Who hasn't had the mandolin riff from this song stuck in their head since the album came out in March? In a year full of cover song recordings, this one is my favorite. There is a not a bad song on this album. Midnight at the Movies is a must own for all country music fans.

Concert Review: Justin Townes Earle at The Horseshoe Tavern

    2. Carolyn Mark and N.Q. Arbuckle - Let's Just Stay Here

I will admit that the reason this album is so high on my list is that their live show was absolutely killer. After hearing Carolyn Mark sing I turned into this crazy/creepy fan girl and confessed my love for her when I ran into her in the washroom that night. How embarrassing. How old am I? Anyway, the album is wonderful, alternating between songs written by Mark and NQ Arbuckle. Some songs are serious (All Time Low), some are fun (Canada Day/Toronto), some are kick-ass covers (Too Sober to Sleep, Downtime), some will make you dance (When I Come Back), and some will make you cry (Saskatoon Tonight). And how can you not love a song that name drops the Drive-By Truckers (Officer Down)? Mark and Neville Quinlan's voices blend so well, and the musicianship on the record is top notch. I can't wait to see them again!

Concert Review: Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle at the Dakota Tavern

    3. Mark Olson & Gary Louris - Ready For The Flood

I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard The Jayhawks trademark song EscucharBlue. My dad was driving me home from college for spring break 1995 and we were somewhere north of Milwaukee when EscucharBlue came on the radio. I've been a huge Jayhawks fan every since. The Jayhawks as we knew them may not exist anymore (they more or less have to pay Rick Rubin to use the Jayhawks name), but Mark Olson and Gary Louris continue making beautiful country/folk music, and Ready for the Flood sounds like it could be a proper Jayhawks album. Not that its a sounds totally like a Jayhawks release, but all of the elements are there. Highlights include The Rose Society, Bicycle, EscucharTurn Your Pretty Name Around, EscucharSaturday Morning On Sunday Street, and the rest of the album. Its also a long alum: 15 tracks and over 55 minutes. But as soon as its over you will want to play it again. I was worried that people would forget about this album since it came out in mid-January, and I remember freezing my ass off in February just to see this duo preform in Toronto. In summary, to quote my buddy Daddy, "The sound of these two humans harmonizing together again will melt your cynical heart and make you weep like a newly born babe washed in the white, blinding light of love." Well said, Daddy.

Concert Review: Gary Louris & Mark Olson at the Mod Club

    4. Ben Nichols - The Last Pale Light in the West

In early 2009 Ben Nichols of Lucero put out his first solo album which immediately frustrated me because I had to wait eleven more months before I could put it on my best of list. We are used to Nichols writing kick-ass rock songs about getting drunk and breaking hearts, but when he put out an acoustic album based on Cormac McCathry's novel Blood Meridian, alt country fans everywhere were blown away. To quote Mr. Nichols himself, "I'm partial to the sad, slow shit," and that statement really shows on this album. Most of this album is slow, melancholy folk music, and you don't necessarily have to know the book to appreciate the lyrics. "Your mother died night you were born, her name you never knew..." Tell me that is not the alt country lyric of the year? And who would have thought that Ben freakin' Nichols would lead me to finally read a McCarthy novel? Which lead me to read another one, which lead me to buy two more as e-books which Brad Pitt will read to me while I am on vacation this winter.

    5. Slaid Cleaves - Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away

Although this album came out in April, it wasn't until I started getting my thoughts on 2009 organized in November when I really started to listen to this album. When I hit the ole shuffle button on my 2009 playlist, the songs from this album always had me looking at my Zune and thinking, "This is great. Who is this?" This is an unhappy record, disguised in happy folk melodies. For example, the opening song EscucharCry sounds like it could be an upbeat, poppy folk tune until you listen to the lyrics. "There's no poison like a dream when it all comes undone." Not to mention the downer of an album title. EscucharGreen Mountains and Me is a beautiful song about love gone wrong. There are several references to dreams not coming true in various songs on this album, especially in the song, uhh, EscucharDreams. Its not to say that this album is super depressing, but like life, we all have a hard time coming to terms with what will and will not be, and Cleaves does an excellent job at expressing these feelings in song.

This album was produced, mixed, and engineered by Gurf Morlix, who also put out one hell of a solo album this year. Morlix also plays various instruments and sings backup vocals on this album.

    6. Corb Lund - Losin' Lately Gambler

This album has the most variety of any album that I listened to in 2009. Although its tagged as "country," it ranges all over the place from traditional country, to ballads, to country-rock, and continues on the long tradition, and Lund's previous songwriting, of humor and storytelling in country music. And some of the songs even contain musical elements of jazz and blues. The opening track, EscucharHorse Doctor, Come Quick, is about scoring drugs off of a veterinarian, which I am pretty sure was also an episode of the Trailer Park Boys. EscucharThis Is My Prairie is an environmental/anti-corporate ballad that could have been written by Steve Earle. EscucharA Game In Town Like This is about regret, and it may be the best song that Lund has ever written. The fact that this song is not played on country radio makes me weep for the future of humanity. Edit: this "fact" may not be totally accurate as country radio doesn't exist in Toronto and I have done no other field research.

    7. Drive-By Truckers - The Fine Print (A Collection Of Oddities And Rarities 2003-2008)

Pseudo-new Drive-By Truckers is better than most brand new releases. I say "pseudo-new" as some of these tracks have been floating around as bootlegs for quite a while (EscucharThe Great Car Dealer War), some were used on random compilations (covers of Tom Petty's EscucharRebels and Bob Dylan's EscucharLike A Rolling Stone), and some tracks are outtakes (EscucharUncle Frank and EscucharGoode's Field Road). My personal favorite is the Trucker's unbelievably rocking cover of Warren Zevon's EscucharPlay It All Night Long which sounds like it could have been straight out of their 2001 opus Southern Rock Opera. I also love the juxtaposition of EscucharUncle Frank, an anti-Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) rocking rant sung by Mike Cooley, followed by a deliberate pro- song EscucharTVA by Jason Isbell. And how great it is to hear new Isbell-penned Truckers songs? DBT have been together for over 15 years and undoubtedly have tons of other tracks stashed away. I can't wait for the next batch of oddities and rarities.

Concert Review: Private Drive-By Truckers show at the Phoenix

    8. Dinosaur Jr. - Farm

The reason I love this album is very simple. I am a child of the 80s, and this record sounds like it was recorded in 1989. Indeed, all three original Dinosaur Jr. members are back for their fifth studio album: J. Mascis on guitar, Lou Barlow on bass, and Murph on drums. Farm sounds like a modern Bug (1989) with lots of Crazy Horse-style guitar distortion and killer riffs. Ten of the 12 tracks were penned by Mascis, while the other two are by Barlow. My only criticism of this album is that the Barlow tracks kind of drag relative to the kickassery (is that a word? spell check says yes) of the Mascis songs. But Barlow's tracks do not diminish the greatness of this record by any means. If you don't want the entire album, just promise me that you will pick up the first four tracks. They rock harder than anything else I have heard in 2009. In a year when indie rock mostly let me down, these aging indie rock gods showed the hipster kids how it is done.

    9. Doug Paisley - Doug Paisley

This is the sleeper album which I kept coming back to in 2009. I often found myself on a late night subway or streetcar train, slightly intoxicated, thinking, "I really want to listen to Doug Paisley." This debut album contains sweet, gentle country folk. It opens with the heartbreaking What About Us? "Cause I just ain't no good alone." Gulp. We Weather is a tender love song about making it through the rough patches in a relationship, and contains some beautiful pedal steel work. EscucharDigging In the Ground has a wonderfully unique piano lick. Take My Hand is about reconciliation. If you like James Taylor without all of the cheesiness and a little more country, then you should check out Doug Paisley. (Awful comparison, I know, but its the best that I can come up with. Doug, if you are reading this I apologize.) Edit: Better comparison: Paisley's Canadian brethren Hayden, but with more twang.

    10. Lucero - 1372 Overton Park

I didn't really like this album until I saw Lucero live. Then I fucking loved this album! There was a lot of hoopla in the blog-o-sphere about the fact that Lucero had incorporated a horn section into its band. To me, it was like Ben Nichols had spent too much time with The Hold Steady, for whom he did background vocals for their 2008 album Stay Positive. In fact, I thought it was The Hold Steady when I first heard it. Overall, I was fine with the horns, and even liked them better live where they were less pronounced. The thing that bugged me about this album was that wasn't that much different from previous Lucero releases. Not that this is a bad thing. I love, love, love their older albums. But after hearing Nichol's solo album (see #4) you realize how much more they can do than "boy with sketchy past meets girl with sketchy past, they get drunk, his/her heart is broken" (more or less the first eight tracks of 1372 Overton Park). "Drinking women chasing whiskey," from EscucharSixes And Sevens is classic Lucero songwriting, as are most of the songs on this album. The only song that really stands out to me is EscucharMom. Nichols slayed me when he did this song live. The song is an ode to the band's mothers, telling them yeah, we fuck around a lot, especially when we are on tour, but don't worry, you raised us right, and we will be home soon. Amazing. I want to hear more songs like EscucharMom from Lucero. If 2007's Rebels, rogues, and sworn brothers was the "piano album," and 1372 Overton Park is the "horn album," I fully expect the "pedal steel" album in 2011.
