A great show
24 Nov 2009, 19:37 de mcpancakes
Thu 15 Oct – KMFDM, Angelspit, Legion Within
I arrived a bit early. I had no problems with the merch people, they all seemed nice. Legion Within came on and they were all right. I wasn't a huge fan of their vocalist, though he sort of reminded me of the vocalist from Jane's Addiction (who I saw/walked out on on May 22nd this year with Nine Inch Nails and Street Sweeper Social Club). The music itself was sometimes okay though. I liked the drummer. Then there was Angelspit who were amusing for the first two minutes, and I quickly tired of. Too heavy or chaotic or whatever you want to call it for me. It all seemed to sound the same.
KMFDM, of course, did not fail me. Sascha came out, expressionless, and the rest filled the stage. The horns on "D.I.Y." began to sound and I was extremely excited. For another hour and a half or so, KMFDM put on a great show. Hau Ruck rocked as hard as I always imagined it would (this was my first time seeing KFMDM). "Adios" was a great sort of solo for Sascha. "Godlike", of course, I was hoping with all of my heart to hear this, and as soon as it started to play, the show was complete for me.
I loved the venue, the Regency Ballroom. I was mainly happy that there were so few people there, I sort of expected more. However, I got an excellent view of the whole stage, I cannot complain.
If anyone knows of any recordings of the show, please link to them in the comments!

Emilie Autumn at Baltimore
18 Oct 2009, 5:02 de o8643
tl:dr version
- I met some pretty awesome people in line
- I got the entire crowd to play Marco Polo with me
- During the show, I was right at the stage surrounded by girls on all sides.
- Some chick threw her bra onstage
- Emilie's violin was the best part of the entire night and blew my mind.
- After the show, we saw a Penn look-alike from Penn and Teller in a black trench coat.
- A guy at the merch table had at least $200-$300, all in $2 dollar bills.
*Let me preface this by warning everyone that I have a terrible memory so some segments may be incomplete or incorrect or somethings may be out of order. I apologize. My reactions to the show, however are 100% correct.*
October 14th my friend Ary and I went to Baltimore for an Emilie Autumn show. Now, I'm by no means a fanboy; there is very little outside Rocky Horror Picture Show that I can get to abandon my composure. EA, though, got damn close. I was quite struck by the entire production so, as an exercise for my writer's muscles, I've decided to document the experience for future memories.
It was a rather miserable day, weather wise. Low 50's/high 40's with a light drizzle on and off made for an unpleasant line experience. We arrived about a half hour before doors at 7 but they were more than a half hour late to open. But waiting around wasn't all that bad; our fellow show goers were quite fun to hang around with. Many scantily clad women were about in Victorian outfits, corsets, fishnets and other various getups. I could only laugh at the complaints issuing forth from those who were way underdressed for the weather. Welcome to Maryland, bitches! Each day, a different season
Our first interaction was with a girl named Millie from the Roanoke, Virginia area. Just a baby at only 14, I felt kinda bad discussing the things we did in line with her and her mother there. While talking with her, I overheard a group of people making RHPS call lines so I introduced myself. Jake, John, and Elena were from Pittsburgh and they drove 4 and a half hours to get down. Topics in line ranged from porn to allergic reactions causing color blindness to Naurto (*shudder*). Turns out Elena is a photographer and works for a club up in Pittsburgh, Jake is an aspiring graphic designer who is colorblind in one eye, and I'm not quite sure what John did, he just kinda was just chilling the entire night.
There was much losing of the Game (YOU LOST THE GAME) to be had for all as well. There was actually another girl who, out of nowhere, just started telling me a story about a guy, a cat and a truck driver. Guy is hit by the truck, truck wraps around a telephone pole and the cat just keels over dead for spite. It a long, involved story with the punch line being the truck driver lost the Game. I wasn't exactly sure what the hell she was talking about but she was good looking so I wasn't complaining, though she was most certainly jailbait.
Ok, enough about the line, we want to talk about the show! My first impression of the venue (and I think everyone's) was IT WAS A FREAKING STARGATE. The entrance to the floor was through a large circle that is actually part of the Bourbon Street Ballroom. This paired with the set of the stage really made everyone feel like they were getting ready to jump dimensions. On stage, there was a huge faux stone circle, very much like the Stargate, with numerous gears scattered across and Roman numerals making it a clock. Stretched on the inside of this was a thin sheet that A elaborate tea set accompanied this steampunk-ish clock complete with various vials labeled "Cure All", "Poison", and other stylized Victorian era art. I was impressed with the level of detail put into the stage.
I ended up being about one or two people deep from the stage right behind the monitor speakers so I could see everything without getting too crushed by the shrieking fans trying to get a touch of Emilie's boot. Being six feet tall has its advantages as I could see everything perfectly without having to stand on my toes like most of the audience needed to do. I believe I may have pissed off a couple people as well; I'm not exactly the easiest to see over. But when you have the opportunity to get right up close and personal, you damn well take it. During the entire show, I had perhaps the best seat in the house. Not too rushed by crazed 14 year olds at center stage but still in the middle of everything. It took about another half hour once everyone got inside so I figured I could play a little game the crowd for shiggles. I shouted "Marco!" and got maybe about ten or so people to respond. The second time and third times, however, it sounded like the entire crowd. Best part of the night.
Which brings me to the amazing show. This was my first Emilie Autumn concert ever and, I must say, I was quite taken aback. Now, I went into the show knowing that she uses some theatrical components but I was expecting her to just play the set-list with little bits in between. I was not prepared, however, for the elaborate production that I witnessed. Pyrotechnics, acrobatics, amazing costumes and crowd participation all came together to create an experience far greater and exciting than I had expected. Emilie had a commanding stage presence but her back up singers, The Blood Crumpets, certainly stole the show for me especially the dread pirate Captain Maggots and her crazed antics I don't wish to ruin the show for anyone who hasn't seen it yet but, suffice to say, the entire cast was simply amazing.
The opener,
4 o'Clock, is one of my favorite songs so I was happy to see it given a proper theatrical treatment complete with exploding teacups. Simply beautiful. I was a bit surprised to hear
Opheliac follow as I was expecting it to be the encore. Mind you, I certainly wasn't complaining. It was a spectacular performance but I was surprised at how little the crowd moved. The next song that really stood out in my mind was
Unlaced. The duet between the harpsichord and Emilie's violin was simply mind blowing. I have always had a soft spot for violinists and their trade. Any fool can pick up a guitar and call themselves a musician but the violin is an instrument that takes true skills to play. Emilie is a true artist with her bow. In fact, anytime her violin came out, I was floored but I don't get the feeling the rest of the crowd had the same feelings as I. Then again, any violin melts my heart so *I* may be the outlier.
While I'm on the topic of her violin,
Leech Jar was *the* song of the night. I literally had my mouth open during the entire song. I found interesting that Emilie, before the song, referred to playing violin as "what I really do". I found myself dumbstruck by these words; she said them with almost a wisp of what I think would be considered regret. I got the feeling that she would rather been playing some of her classical material and showing off her amazing bowing. My heart broke a little too, because she comes from such a strong classical background yet no audience to show it off too. I don't know, mayhap I am reading a bit too much into things but I can't shake the feeling that Emilie would rather be know for her wicked violin skills.
Dominant is the next song that stands out in my head. A purely instrumental song, Emilie wasn't on stage. In fact, only one of the Crumpets, Veronica, was actually present. She danced with two feather fans much in the style of a burlesque show. It was a hypnotic experience and certainly not one that I was expecting. (I think the common theme of the night was a lot of my expectations were broken)
No one was expecting
Bohemian Rhapsody and when Emilie and the Crumpets started the first verse, the entire place went nuts. And when I say "entire place", I mean all the people who actually know who Freddy Mercury is. Seriously, I see all the middle aged men singing along while all the tweens had this great "WTF" on their faces. I almost got the feeling that they played it solely to please the older audience members. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome cover and Emilie's violin makes it magic. Just another example of my expectations being shattered.
Of course, no show is perfect and I do wish to offer some criticisms. First off, and this is by no means Emilie's fault, some of the crowd was just annoying. As noted before, the primary audience were 14 year old girls. One of my new acquaintances in line described it as a "Goth N*Sync* concert and, if I didn't know Autumn's music, I would have guessed the same thing based on the crowd. Another thing that bothered me was that Emilie only met with holders of VIP tickets. Now, I'm not a veteran concert goer so I don't know what the established protocol is for meeting with the performers, but that kinda smacks of money grubbing. When I went to see KMFDM, they were real cool about talking to fans. Hell, I even got to meet the opening band, Angelspit, at the food booth. The last thing that bothered me, and this is just a personal problem, was that nothing from Enchant was performed. I would have love to hear
Chambermaid or
Castle Down live but I suppose they don't exactly fit in with the character Emilie is portraying.
In all, I am extremely glad I was able to go. I picked up a copy of Opheliac from the merch table and got it signed by three of the Crumpets. Of course, they were the real show stealers with their fire hoops, stilts, acrobatics, dancing... well I don't want to give *too* much away; you should go see it for yourself! It truly is a magnificent spectacle to behold and an enjoyable experience.

NO.9 & 10: Garbage and LaFee
• Poor nine and ten, how many times you listened to them?
627, 516
• Why have them as number nine and ten, where is the love?
I simply got bored of Garbage. LaFee is very teeth-gnashingly sweet pop. While awesome, I can't listen to her/them for very long at a time.
• How long have you liked them?
Garbage... maybe since I was 11-12? So 4/5 years. LaFee was shortly after TH, so somewhere around October/November 2008. -
