Muy relacionado con España, ya que vivió una temporada en Madrid (entre 1960 y 1962).después lo haría en Gibraltar desde donde comprondría la mayoría de sus canciones. Junto con Mike Hazlewood formaron uno de los duos compositores más importantes de la Historia de la música de los 70. Hicieron para Karina la canción que algunos aún recordamos «Las flechas del amor», también compusieron canciones para Art Garfunkel(Mary was an only child 1973),Hollies(The air that I breathe 1974)y un sinfin de temas para otros autores. Con Carole Bayer Sager hizo para Leo Sayer el tema When I need you en el año 1976.

En el año 1972 empezó a tener exito como cantante en solitario con su «It never rains in Southern California», tema que incluso lo grabó en castellano.
Un fabuloso cantautor reconocido por grandes cantantes, cuya vida dedicada a la música, muchos desconocen.

Además, es padre del músico estadounidense Albert Hammond Jr, guitarrista de The Strokes, yeah beibe
