  • Playing poker with a new and improved accountant

    5 Dic 2009, 10:49 de cat-dentures

    Stolen, as always.

Name five musical acts that you like, that surprises people:
    1. Opeth - They're honestly the only metal I enjoy, and I think the only band from my metalhead phase that stuck with me, because they're so much more than just metal. They combine elements of blues, jazz, folk, and polka (yes, polka) into their songs, so I think it's unfair to classify them as a strictly death metal band. They're more diverse from their peers which really makes them stand out.
    2. 16 Horsepower - They're an alternative country/dark americana band, and whenever I play a song by them, people look at me strangely.
    3. DJ Krush - bordering on hip-hop, but more trip-hop. I'm not the kind of person that looks like they listen to hip-hop at all.
    4. The Associates - I honestly can't play this around people I know, because they just don't get it. Apparently, it's too "camp" with the synths overkill and Billy's operatic voice. but that's what makes them so fantastic.
    5. Tears for Fears - They have some cheesy songs which is pretty much all that people know, but if you'd dig deeper into their catalog, they have some solid gold tunes.

Name five musical acts that you don't like, that surprises people:
    1. Nine Inch Nails - I'm sorry, but I can't stand Trent Reznor's nasal voice. I don't care if they've toured with Peter Murphy. I still can't listen to them.
    2. Any emo/screamo band (horrible!!!) - Apparently when people first meet me, they think I listen to that rubbish. It's unfortunate, really.
    3. Radiohead - Same as above. Yes, I know, everyone and their mom loves them, but they do nothing for me. and Thom Yorke really bothers me for some reason... I can't quite place my finger on it.
    4. Big Black - I like a couple of songs by them, but as a whole, they're just no good. There's something very sinister (and not the good sinister) and dirty about them. I don't know if anyone else gets that vibe. I was watching some live shows by them on Youtube, and I felt like throwing up. Weird feeling...
    5. Ariel Pink - I don't get it. I gave his music many chances, and while everyone else is so impressed with him, I just can't enjoy it.

Name five musical acts that you are indifferent to, that surprises people:
    1. The Misfits - Just doesn't do anything for me.
    2. Blank Dogs - Everyone in the indie world loves him, but I just can't get into it.
    3. Björk - Her music is interesting... I'll give her that... but it's just not enjoyable.
    4. The Durutti Column - Judging by my musical taste, I should like them, but from what I've heard, I'm just not impressed. Maybe I'll give them another try later.
    5. The Damned - They have a couple of nice songs, but overall their music just doesn't stand out for me.

Name five musical acts that you really like, that no one else seems to have heard of:
    1. The Associates - Truly underplayed and unknown. but I wouldn't say underappreciated. People who do listen to them know that they have hit musical gold.
    2. People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz - They make some of the best sound collages I've heard.
    3. Bubonic Plague - Lo-fi that's so fun, I sometimes wish it was hi-fi. Also, Geneva Jacuzzi solo is fantastic. Ridiculous lyrics, which I love.
    4. Tuxedomoon - They have a cult following, but are still not very well-known.
    5. Modern Eon - Cold, dreamy post-punk. Shame they only released one album.

Name five musical acts that you used to like, but don't anymore:
    1. Duran Duran
    2. Adam and the Ants
    3. The Sisters of Mercy
    4. Pink Turns Blue (Not the Husker Du song. The German band.)
    5. London After Midnight

Name five musical acts that you used to not like, but now like:
    1. Sonic Youth - First time I heard Daydream Nation, I was disgusted. I gave it another chance and still didn't like it. Tried once more, and fell in love.
    2. The Cramps - They just looked real sleazy and I wasn't interested in their music. Now I've learned to enjoy their camp tunes.
    3. Miranda July - Ok, she's more of a performance artist, but she has some music mixed with her spoken word pieces. I initially found her voice very irritating. It's slightly annoying still, but has grown on me.
    4. Tuxedomoon - I was mostly indifferent to them at first. After listening to several more of their albums, I started to really get in to them.
    5. Modern English - As much as I love Taco Bell, I couldn't stand "Melt With You". but I bought the album on cassette just to check out their other songs and was really surprised. They have amazing post-punk songs that have sadly been overshadowed by their one hit single, which sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of their catalog.

Name five albums that you you used to not like, but now like:
    1. Silverchair's Diorama - I wanted to break that CD the first time I listened to it. It was so operatic and orchestrated and I was in that stage when I was used to listening to grunge and metal. It later grew on me, and became one of my favorites.
    2. Public Image Ltd.'s Metal Box - I liked pretty much one song-- Swan Lake. The rest was too difficult to get in to. Now, I'm realizing how amazing it really is. It's one of those albums that takes a lot of time to get used to.
    3. Most of Tuxedomoon's albums - They took a while to get in to, but were totally worth it.
    4. Joy Division's Closer - Was one of the most depressing albums I had heard. Some of it is still quite depressing, but in a darkly danceable way.
    5. Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation - Do I really need to explain this again?

Name five CDs you could listen to over and over and never get tired of:
    1. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon - I can't even count how many times I've listened to it, and I still love it. It's been said over and over, but it's truly a masterpiece.
    2. All of The Associates albums... but mostly Fourth Drawer Down and Sulk - I know they're going to be one of those bands that will stick with me years down the road.
    3. Opeth's Damnation - Their least metal album ever-- no screaming or heavy guitars! Nothing but the soothing, clean vocals of Mikael Åkerfeldt to lull you to sleep. No crazy Jekyll & Hyde transformations here (which I still enjoy).
    4.
    5.
Honestly, I can get tired of a song or album if I listen to it too much, but those are the exceptions... and all I can think of right now.

  • Chibis (Part II)

XD
