AFI (A Fire Inside) es una banda estadounidense formada en 1991 por Davey Havok (voz), Markus Stopholese (guitarra), Vic Chalker (bajo) y Adam Carson (batería). Vic Chalker fue reemplazado a los 8 meses por Geoff Kresge antes de sacar EP alguno. Más adelante Geoff sería reemplazado por Hunter Burgan y Mark Stopholese por Jade Puget.
Historia de la banda
AFI nació cuando Davey Havok, Mark Stopholese y Vic Chalker formaron un proyecto en 1991 para tocar más que todo música Hardcore Punk. En ese entonces, la banda no tenía un baterista ni tampoco experiencia en tocar intrumentos. Stopholese entonces sugirió que su amigo Adam Carson se uniese ya que él tenía un set de batería. Stopholese aprendió guitarra, mientras que Chalker aprendió bajo, para luego sacar el EP Dork en 1993 con el ahora difunto grupo Loose Change, en el cual estaba el futuro guitarrista Jade Puget. Chalker perdió interés luego y fue reemplazado por el bajista-compositor Geoff Kresge.
AFI se desbandó cuando sus miembros atendieron distintas universidades, incluyendo la Universidad de California en Berkeley (donde Havok comenzó pero jamás terminó sus estudios) y la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara. Más adelante se reúnen para tocar nuevamente juntos, lo que los hace cambiar de parecer y salir de la Universidad para dedicarse a tiempo completo a la banda.
Después de tocar en varios tours con la banda, Kresge decidió dejar la banda. Fue después reemplazado por Burgan por el resto de «Very Proud of Ya» tour.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Black Sails/All Hallows/Art of Drowning era that everyone seems to fawn over as much as the next fan. But The Last Kiss and At a Glance have the same intro. As do Who Knew and The Boy Who Destroyed the World. The Nephilim and Dream of Waking sound so similar in certain areas that I think they may have initially been the same song. Keeping Out of Direct Sunlight and Strength Through Wounding open their respective albums expressing what is more or less the exact same sentiment. That does not happen anymore and frankly, I think they've gotten much better in all aspects. Which isn't to say I don't adore their whole discography, because I do. But Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground are my favorites by a large margin.

I like their new songs, but as albums (past StS) I don't think they hold up very well because I think there's too much filler material. It's one of those situations where you wish they made those songs as b-sides. Fainting Spells should have made DU and Too Late For Gods has such a familiar vibe to it that it's a crime that it didn't make it to CL.

The first two albums bore me. Everything from Shut Your Mouth to Crash Love is an awesome listen though. Clove Smoke Catharsis, Bleed Black, and Kiss and Control are probably my favorite songs. They were also my first-ever concert in 2004, and all 15-20 shows I've been to since have failed to compare. Just such a massive feel to that show. Older songs like Cruise Control, newer ones (at the time) like Miseria and Silver and Cold, the crowd sang every word. Small venue vibe in a pretty big venue. What an unforgettable night.
