ABC se formó en el año 1980 en Sheffield, Inglaterra luego de que Martin Fry, un periodista musical, entrevistó a la banda Vice Versa para su fanzine «Modern Drugs». Ellos adoptaron a Fry como vocalista y cambiaron su nombre por ABC. La reagrupada banda fue anidada dentro del nuevo movimiento llamado en esos tiempos «New Romantic» (o Nuevo Romántico), que incluía entre otras bandas a: Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet y The Human League. La banda ofrecería varios reveses estilísticos a lo largo de su carrera y probablemente sean mejor etiquetados como Soul del Norte, por su obvia inspiración y por ser el elemento más universal de todos los que ofrecían, que utilizaran para influenciar al resto. Probablemente el hecho más distinguido de la banda es su uso ominoso de los sintetizadores. Secciones con sintetizadores ominosos, discordantes o en acordes menores eran características que unían a la mayoría de las verdaderas bandas integrantes del movimiento Nuevo Romántico. Además, ABC alentó desde sus primeros comienzos una predominancia de sonido funk y soul a sus composiciones.
