Tupac Amaru Shakur nació en Brooklyn, estado de Nueva York , de los Estados Unidos de América, el 16 de junio del año 1971, con el nombre de Lesane Parish Crooks. Su madre Afeni Shakur y su padre William Garland fueron miembros activos del famoso grupo anti-racial «Black Panther» (Pantera Negra), entre la década de los 60’s y 70’s. Afeni fué condenada a prisión a la edad de 21 años, acusada de participar en la planeación de un ataque a bancos y almacenes pequeños… , fue ahi donde dio a luz a su primer hijo, a quien llamaría Lesane y posteriormente cambiaría su nombre , cuando éste aún era pequeño a Tupac Amaru (en honor al indígena revolucionario del Perú). El significado de Tupac es «Shining Serpent» (Serpiente Luminosa). En su infancia Tupac fué apodado «Black Prince» (Príncipe negro). Cuando Tupac tenía apenas dos años , nació su hermanastra Sekyiwa Shakur, hija de Mutula Shakur, quién pocos meses antes del nacimiento de su hija fue puesto bajo prisión por el cargo del robo de un auto a mano armada. Con Mutula en la cárcel, la familia Shakur experimentó tiempos díficiles, y optaron por mudarse al Bronx (siempre en el estado de Nueva York). A la edad de 12 años, Tupac descubre su amor por la actuación e ingresa a la famosa 127th Street Ensemble de Harlem. Ya siendo un chico adolecente Tupac se muda junto con su familia a Baltimore, donde comienza a escribir su poesía y canciones, y su mamá lo inscribe en la escuela de artes de Baltimore para recibir clases de actuación y ballet.
