Défense de la basse de viole contre les enterprises du violon et les prétentions du violoncelle!

No, that's not a cello. It's been around much longer than that.
No, this is not "classical" music. It's even more engrossing and soul-stirring.
Yes, viols come in many sizes. The group is called "Viola da gamba" but we like the little viols just as well.
The revival of viol playing is one of the best things to happen to music. Have a listen.

The number of artists called Phantasm has now reached ten — although two of them are fictitious (one each from an anime and an animated sitcom). All ten of them must share a single artist page because, well, that's how we do things here. The best known and most awarded of the 10 is the viol consort Phantasm, based in London and active for 20 years now. If you don't know their music yet, you should investigate.

Maybe some of you already know this 2010 interview with Paolo Pandolfo, but I just found it and think it's quite interesting, so here it goes:

For those just getting to know Jordi Savall, here is a 2007 article on the artist, his Hespérion XXI ensemble, and his Alia Vox label: LINK

As we follow the heart-breaking events in Syria, don't forget that one of our most admired musicians has personal ties to that country. I mean Fahmi Alqhai, founder and director of Accademia del Piacere.

2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the Viola da Gamba Society of America. National Public Radio did a story on a "conclave" of more than 350 viol players; here's a link to it.

The group is still here. Unfortunately it has become impossible for me to send messages to all the group members except via this Shoutbox. There is a "messageall bug" that has persisted for more than a month, and there is no sign of a fix. Sorry to bear bad news.

Stop by the Phantasm page and vote up pictures of the viol consort instead of the half dozen metal and rock bands that share the name.

I'm trying a different group pic. This one is courtesy of the Association de Caix d'Herveloix, and it looks a lot better on their website.

Another addition: Silke Strauf & Claas Harders are a Dutch duo who have recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations performed on two viols.

Just added Susanne Heinrich to the artist connections. She has released some outstanding solo albums besides her work with Charivari Agréable and other groups.

Added The Royal Consort to artist connections. I’ve scrobbled their album of Purcell and Jenkins music, so it should be in the system before long.

Check the Discussions for this group. There's a thread on "Modern and crossover music for viols." Here's a link.

Sorry I am new here and not sure where to post this: Where can I find music of other gamba players using their instruments in other styles of music? Jazz or other styles? I am just starting to learn the gamba and look forward to learning some early classical music but I do like all styles of music and would like to use the instrument, if I can, in all styles of music. The gamba to me has such a beautiful sound and with 6/7 strings it has so many uses and versatility, in my eyes, I cant see why it could not be used in other ensembles. Thanks for any help.

I've just added a few more "broken consorts" (of viols and other instruments) to this group's connections. Examples: Charivari Agréable (an English group with a French name) and The Locke Consort (a Dutch group with an English name).

Great solo concert by Jordi Savall: Notice how he uses the bow.

The common explanation is that the relatively soft-voiced viol was found to be less suited to large concert halls than the louder, more brilliant-toned violin and its relatives. But the transition was gradual, with viols and violins often heard together. The bass viol remained in use longest (to ca. 1800?), both as a solo and continuo instrument. Of course, now composers are again writing new music for viol consorts.
