Jetydo, thanks for getting in touch with me and connecting me as artist having done the P. C. The album I entitled, "Busted In Bulgaria" are songs that are pretty lo-fi but capture at least what I was going through at the time. All recorded in Bulgaria. Jim

Also, the artists I listed here are all RPCVs. I'd only heard of one of them before today.

Bon chance, Erin! You'll have plenty of opportunity to hear live music, and purchase bootlegged cassettes and cds, I'm sure. After finishing my service, I traversed west africa from Benin to Senegal by scooter, car, bus, train, and ferry. I'd be interested in hearing where you're headed once you find out.

I'm nominated for Francophone Africa October 2009 and going through medical clearance right now...hopefully everything will run smoothly and I can actually leave before the next new year! My interest in West African music predates the whole Peace Corps thing and I'm really looking forward to hearing lots of great new stuff wherever I end up.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana from 1982-85. I once met Manu Dibango in a mens room of a swank hotel in Lome, Togo. My old cornet served me well when highlife bands visited my town (Wiamoase, Ashanti). I almost got arrested leaving a night club in the capital of Burkina Faso, when I led a parade singing "Ougadougou, Ougadougou" to the tune of Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy" just before the midnight curfew.

My favorite musical discoveries while in Benin from 1999 to 2001: Ali Farka Toure, Manu Dibango, Magic System, Benin Passion (various artists), Makoma, and Nigerian Abba impersonators.
