How do you discover new music?

  • hmmm.

well. i also like under the radar. ive been meaning to get a subscription. i ordered their Beirut edition specifically for that one article hahaha. i drool over it everytime i flip through haha. well the magazine is great. its how i discovered Ferraby Lionheart and tons of other stuff.

i also like the hype machine ( http://hypem.com/ ). its a combination of many different mp3 blogs and its great. i like it a lot because every artist on there pretty much has at least one song you can listen to. i found out about Brass Bed from there.

i LOVE last.fm . its probably my favorite way to find out about new stuff. ive discovered too many artists from here haha.

i also use pitchfork. but i dont always take into consideration their ratings of some albums. i like to look at them see what the person has to say and then check them out for myself. i mean i love Au Revoir Simone but they dont exactly get the best ratings on pitchfork haha. i discovered A Hawk and a Hacksaw from here.

i also like haha. i like the urban outfitters music blog and their playlist ( http://blog.urbanoutfitters.com/playlist/ ) for discovering new stuff. i love the whole indie pop and electric techno stuff and they really like that stuff too haha. its how i discovered a lot of bands like Santogold, Beach House, The Last Shadow Puppets, Cut Copy, and one of my all time favorite bands Au Revoir Simone. this blog is awesome!

and lastly i have three outside sources you will not be able to use. haha three of my good friends who are music buffs like me. were always exchanging music and telling each other bands and musicians to check out.

i find music in random places i dont really have an exact list. but those i mentioned are blogs/websites/magazines/people that do not fail me. haha.

hope i helped! and i will definitely check out your sources dai77.

Well, I've never heard of urban outfitters, so that is something new to me. They seem to have a lot of videos, which is good. I hardly ever see music videos of bands that I like.

  • well...

youtube is your best friend for that. haha well urban outiftters is my favorite clothing store hehe. when i found out they had a blog and a playlist i was so excited. yay.

to be honest i only use last.fm. i have loads of music blogs bookmarked but i rarely visit them since they only have links to stuff but never really review anything. and if they do, they never say much :(

now they added this cool recommendations feature here, i usually write down the names and then download something. as your library grows there's more and more to discover!

uh toda la paja pensar en una firma. lo dejo asi.

I have library full of music to discover as well. According to iTunes, I still haven't listened to half of my library.

  • hehe..i worked at urban outfitters....just quit a few days ago to go back to school

    blogs i like.

    http://scrumptunes.blogspot.com/
    http://www.brooklynvegan.com/
    http://www.donewaiting.com/
    http://www.muzzleofbees.com/
    http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/
    http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/

mostly find music from bumming around record stores.. and the web.

a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous, got me?
  • haha.

my library is crammed with so much music and i force myself to make playlists of stuff i havnt listened to. i do that about every two weeks or so and listen to the playlist nonstop on my ipod. its really great. but i always revert back to my old favorites in time haha.

Occasionally, I use allmusic.com. That site seems to be a great site to learn more about more established acts. They also have a New Release Newsletter that covers nearly every album released that week.

ah, i used to have allmusic.com on my bookmarks but i found several mistakes (i.e. dates and other things (that maybe only i care about?)) so i stopped using it. reviews there are quite good though.

  • I find record labels websites- especially small indies- are really good ways to find new music. Cos theyre trying to promote their bands there's always lots of mp3's to listen to.

Other than that I live in the UK and read WIRE, great for finding out about obscure out-there stuff- from sound artists to underground london grime.......

I should have thought to mention this earlier. This is nice ambient electronica from south america. I think all of the albums on this page is free.

  • I just to random blogs. It seems to work well.

    i am life.
  • i get the feeling that i want to listen to something new when i get tired of the music i have, and started searching everywhere, podcasts, myspace random searches in the music search bar, or look at blogs, also using slsk, i wirte a random word and download whatever sounds cool or interesting, and last but not least i ask people for recommendations. :3

Choosing not to choose is also a choice...so, by not doing anything, i'm actually doing something!
  • I visit a lot of the sites already mentioned and trade with very cool hipsters like y'all ;), but I don't think anyone has mentioned Tiny Mix Tapes which is another place I like to browse sometimes.

    http://tinymixtapes.com/index.php

I saw them at the Spitz, HQ Club, that was legendary...
  • I use pretty much all the resources posted above (under the radar, etc.) so I won't bother repeating :)
    with these additions however:
Seattle Weekly and the Stranger (local papers and their websites - sometimes with free downloads!!!...who cover everything going on in Seattle): http://www.seattleweekly.com/music, http://classifieds.thestranger.com/seattle/Results?subsection=77614 or
    http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Music

flyers around town, and the local radio stations (KEXP is amazing!!! larger bands are present but they do a ton of small bands from all genres...check them out at www.kexp.org ....they stream)

I and my friends call our system F2F not P2P. Sharing music 'F'ace to 'F'ace with the portable hard drive. Acutally I have nothing to share as I have no internet. I'm just fed. They are huge fans of Pitchforkmeida, I'm always updated without lifting even one finger.

And last.fm. I found Micah P.hinson through Last.fm freedownloading and now I'm a big fan of him. do love him so much.

Yes being out is a good thing. Speaking of swapping cd's. I'm also a member of a mix cd trading club. We exchange mixes around twice a year through the mail.

  • yeah i'm no fan of pitchfork either.........
i mostly just browse certain music forums and if it sounds interestin, i'll get it or sometimes i just get them at random. um i go to a lot of shows and most of the time the opener is somone i havent heard of.........also this group!

Well, as far as I know they get only information what album comes out. they have solid enough taste in music sometimes too solid. anyway one of friends left for another country today, the other is suffering from no internet of his new house so I have to find the way to survive on my own... or just listening to old music? hmmm, think that's not that bad.
