    The Heart Asks Pleasure First

    WATCH!

For those who don't know, The Heart Asks Pleasure First was a track from Michael Nyman's score for The Piano. Tuomas wrote this version but Nyman would not allow it to be released, or, we thought, played live in its entirety - but apparently they were just saving the best for last.... ;)

Alternate takes (clearer view of the stage):
Beginning of the song including the final bow
    End of the song

The videos above are the only recordings we have of the song so far; the studio recording has never leaked. I've assembled a composite MP3 from these videos containing the complete song; PM me your email address if you'd like it.

This is what I could make of the lyrics (I'm AndromedaRoach), see if you can help figure them out. :D

EDIT: Thanks to os_teriyaki and YouTube user Zeliziouz for their aid!

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore of wistful sea
My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Cast away into the sea
The good in me, the child within
The cruelest heart made me forget
In moments I wish it to be

    Hold inside my last fire
You will conquer death by dawn
Slave to the toil, this mortal coil
Risked by the siren that voyage

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
    An end for winter morn
Calling us, the sirens of the dark

    Frozen moments in time
Little hideaways, the meadows of life
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore a voice so sweet
My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

Scroll down for an explanation of how Tuomas' lyrics relate to the film. :)

You're welcome! So do we all.... :)

  • Oh my god ;_______; I never imagined their cover would be this amazing... okay, so Michael Nyman might be my current most hated person for not letting them release this!! I want the studio version so badly ;_____; LEAK LEAK LEAK LEAK!!!

(and this may be the first and only time I say that ^__^;;)

  • I'm gonna suggest a few alternatives, but Andro I think you're virtually 100% correct on this, I take my hat off to you my friend :3

    ...into the sea
The good in me will shine with you
The cruelest won't make me forget
In moments I wish it to be

    Hold inside my last fire
You will conquer death by dawn
Slave to the toil, this mortal coil
Risked by the siren that night

    We'll bear the weight (wait?)
    Years for your heart
    An end for winter morn
Calling us, the sirens of the dark

For us the moments in time
Little hideaways, the play (prayer?) of life
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    We'll bear the weight (wait?)
    Years for your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore a voice so sweet
My guiding star may live in me
The promise I wish it to be

CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS!!! *_____*

Thanks, much better! :D I think it must be "wait," that makes sense. :)

My first comment on the video:

Well, now I know what I'm going to be listening to on repeat all day. :) Thank you so much for uploading this! There are no words adequate to describe how ecstatically amazing this is. I actually screamed twice while watching this video for the first time. :-P
Keep watching for new videos on YouTube! Here's a better view, though the sound is worse, you can see them bow out in this one. :)

  • Although my genius sister just suggested that:

"The good in me will shine with you"

    might be:

"The good in me, the child in you" or "the child within"
    Thoughts? :3

  • What the hell?!?!?!?!
Oh, I LOVE this! Where is this from?! :'( It makes me cry... last concert.... Hartwall arena...
What are you trying to do to me sending me this?! Make me fall from the chair again?! Well, I fell anyway....

I WANT this to be a proper song!!!! <3 Anette sounds just amazing there (though it's really impossible to hear WHAT is she singing, even for you who actually speak Englis...), definitely thanks for sharing :P (But I think I've broken some bones... xD )

  • Hey cool, it started with the last verse! :D Wish I could hear it all the way through, the build-up would be awesome... So I think it's:

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore a voice so sweet
My guiding star may live in me
[although hearing it from this video, it sounds really different :S something like "My __ling start made me believe"]
The promise I wish it to be

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

As we wade into the sea [at which point we're joined with the first video]
The good in me, the child within
The cruelest won't make me forget
In moments I wish it to be

    Hold inside my last fire
You will conquer death by dawn
Slave to the toil, this mortal coil
Risked by the siren that night

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
    An end for winter morn
Calling us, the sirens of the dark

For us the moments in time
Little hideaways, the player/prayer/the something of life
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore a voice so sweet
My guiding star may live in me
[though I think it's "My __ling start made me believe" again but I can't make out that word!!]
The promise I wish it to be

On YouTube, someone who was there just told me she heard "kindest heart" in place of "guiding star," and I'm sure she's right. :D

Great view of the idiots walking out XD (second part from that second source....)

  • Ah, that makes perfect sense! Thanks random youtube person! :D

So "My kindest heart made me believe" :)

  • Yeah *just checked* it's definitely that :D

Updated the original post :) How the lyrics reflect the film:

...Okay. First some intro stuff from Wikipedia:

The Piano is a 1993 film about a mute female pianist and her daughter, set during the mid-19th century in a rainy, muddy frontier New Zealand backwater.

The Piano tells the story of a mute Scotswoman, Ada McGrath, whose father sells her into marriage to a New Zealand frontiersman, Alistair Stewart, and she is shipped off along with her young daughter Flora. Ada has not spoken a word since she was six years old, communicating instead through sign language for which her near-adolescent daughter has served as the interpreter. Ada has no occupation, and has spent most of her time obsessively playing her piano.

    Silent night surrounding me

Wikipedia: The film opens and closes with this Thomas Hood quote, from his poem "Silence":

There is a silence where hath been no sound. There is a silence where no sound may be in the cold grave under the deep deep sea.
On the shore a voice so sweet

In the film, Ada is deposited on the shore of New Zealand alone with her daughter and piano. The piano is Ada's voice. (However, sometimes this line sounds something like "I wished for sleep." O_o)

My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

The Promise is a track from The Piano. I suppose these lines refer to Baines, the man Ada develops an affair with.

    We'll bear the wait
    Years for your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Cast away into the sea
The good in me, the child within

Ada decided to stop speaking when she was a child, and has kept it up her whole life simply because of her incredibly strong will. For this reason, as she narrates the film her voice is the voice of a child, the child within her.

    ====SPOILER WARNING====

Highlight the following to read it:

At the end of the film, Ada has her piano thrown into the sea because she can no longer play it (more on that shortly). She then decides she doesn't want to live without her piano, and deliberately entangles herself with the rope attached to the piano as it descends to the sea bed, but changes her mind in time and kicks herself free.

The cruelest won't make me forget
In moments I wish it to be

Her husband earlier cut off her index finger so that she would no longer be able to play the piano.

    Hold inside my last fire
You will conquer death by dawn
Slave to the toil, this mortal coil
Risked by the siren that night

I'm not sure what "that night" means, since most things in the film happen during the day... I'll have to watch it again soon!

I just figured this out while lying in bed at 4:30 AM, unable to go back to sleep - it's "risked by the siren that VOYAGE!" See the spoiler section to understand what that means. :)

EDIT: I just heard "Frozen moments in time" on my 80th listen.... XD

  • Nice explanations and improvements Andro :D I have one more edit - I think "The cruelest won't make me forget" might be "The cruelest heart made me forget". This way it mirrors the line, "My kindest heart made me believe".

    Ahhhh! Brilliant, thanks! :)

EDIT: I just heard "Frozen moments in time" on my 80th listen, I think that works better with the next line (whatever it is) :)

  • This song is so beautiful, i'd almost cry while listening to it. I hope someone leak it :-D

  • I did cry, when I listened it earlier xD Andro, I think you're right about "frozen moments", it does fit better :)

More suggestions from YouTube members, I'm too tired to go through it tonight but I think they're right about at least a couple of lines. :)

    mdoggm:
They killing me, the child within
My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

The lonely side is lost for life
Human heart young yearned for love...

    anda0105:
Hold inside my lust for life

    mdoggm:
    Wielding the wind
    Years by your heart
    Again pourin´ for more
loneliness, the silence of the dark

    Frozen moments in time
Little hideaways, the meadows of life
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore of wistful sea
My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

  • "Little hideaways, the meadows of life" < I definitely think this is right! :D I've been thinking for ages that it was a two-syllable m word, but I couldn't think of anything xD

"On the shore of wistful sea" < I wonder about this too, it sounded like "wistful sea" a few times to me too. But I do think it's probably "a voice so sweet", even so.

Other lines I'll have to listen again to work it out, but I'm currently not convinced.

Oh, wow... I'm not a big fan of Anette, though this song is just... @_@

I honestly envy everyone who was at that concert with every fibre of my being.

    :D

I'm calling the first stanza as wistful sea and the last as a voice so sweet, for now. :) I am, again, too tired to consider the rest. XD

EDIT: A third source has emerged, they were in a better place for acoustics but their phone could apparently only record 30 seconds at a time. :-P

From the beginning - it pretty definitely is "wistful sea," and it's not "in moments I wish," it sounds like "the boldest." O_o

The final text - I think they'd walked to the back by this point, but it's nice to see this any way. :)

  • Okay, these are the lyrics as I think at the moment, suggestions included:

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore of wistful sea
My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

    We'll bear the wait
    Years by your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Cast away into the sea
The good in me, the child within
The cruelest heart made me forget
The promise I wish it to be
Hold inside my lust for life
Human heart young yearned for love
Slave to the toil, this mortal coil
Risked by the siren that voyage

    We'll bear the wait
    Years by your heart
    Again pourin' for more
Loneliness, the silence of the dark

    Frozen moments in time
Little hideaways, the meadows of life
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    We'll bear the wait
    Years by your heart
Little hideaways for a lonely heart

    Silent night surrounding me
On the shore of wistful sea
My kindest heart made me believe
The promise I wish it to be

Though I do think "the promise" could be "the boldest", there seems to be a d in there; and it could be "weilding the wind", again there seems to be a d. Also I'm not convinced "meadow" is the right word but it's the closest we've got at the moment :)

And regarding that last video - "see you 2011"!!!! That's a promise, Nightwish... awesome \m/>w<\m/

Haha, yeah :D Thanks! What does "Again pourin' for more" even mean though? XD

  • Great job working out the lyrics for this! :D
I am in love love love with this song. <3
