Not saying lyrics are bad. Not at all. It's just, sometimes they seem to come in first and that's wrong. Lyrics should serve the music, not the other way around. This group is for people who listen...

As someone who agrees that most of the time, lyrics don't matter... it's good to care about lyrics sometimes. Especially when it comes to folk music. I was avoiding Bob Dylan for years because the instrumentation wasn't strong enough to attract me, as well as his voice isn't exactly the best. But even when melodies are good, the focus of certain kinds of music is in the lyrics. I think not necessarily we should take the "It's all about lyrics" statements to the extreme, because like many of you pointed out, some lyrics are dumb, some music is instrumental. The point is that all of it has an artistic intention or whatnot, but sometimes understanding them contributes to the experience. Discussing lyrics is fantastic, though. Sometimes even for personal reasons you might want to avoid certain songs, because of what's on the lyrics.

great instrumentation + good lyrics = the perfect combination. But if not... then the melody and the instrumentation is what matters. Cant imagine myself listening to bad music just because it might have some good lyrics in it... [2]

oh and "I like music that has a meaning or a message" is something that really pisses me off for probably no good reason.

I once had someone say to me something along the lines of "I listen for the music, but mainly for the lyrics. If you just want the sound you may as well listen to the toilet or something". It's certainly an... interesting... way to look at music.

But while I can understand listening to music and paying attention to the lyrics, if you're listening soley for the lyrics, completely refusing to listen to instrumental music and judging a song based purely on the lyrics, then I have no idea why you're listening to music.

in most pop music the vocals are the prevailing, ahem, voice, in the music itself, but can still be seen as a musical instrument, just a human-made one. And a good voice can really lend a close emotional attachment that most instruments simply cannot. I just don't give a damn about what they're saying. That's what I like about vocalists like Jon Anderson, who himself admits that he doesn't know what the hell his lyrics mean, just that he uses them to create the sound in the vocals that he wants.

I'll listen to a band that has great music but dumb lyrics, I will not listen to a band that has bad music but great lyrics. [2] Exactly, I'd even just happily listen to instrumental music all day. I really only care about melodies or atmospheres made by instruments; I rarely consider lyrics the main focus of a song, I just consider them a melody that is sung. If the lyrics are shit but sang in a good melody I'll listen to it, but not the other way round.

Except a few bands, I rarely give a heck about the lyrics, cause I'm not a reciter to memorize endless walls of texts in my head. And many bands I listen to use languages what I don't understand, but they just sound cool. But it doesn't mean that I've no clue what the bands are singing about, I just don't stress about the words in each song.

It irks me when people avoid instrumental music just because it doesn't have vocals/lyrics. [2]
