I Hate Music Snobs » Debates

What certain genre would you say has the most snobbish fans?

  • Unfortunately metal, and classic rock fans.... I listen to metal and rock but i also listen to "fake" music... But People who listen to classical music think that they are superior to everybody so they are the real music snobs...

Good and Evil are just imaginary friends.
  • well, i somewhat agree with the classical music, but i expound on that to say... younger people who listen to classic rock. They seem to think that today's music stinks and that talent somehow peaked in 1970.

I *hate* people who do the deadlines. "Music died in [insert year before they were born]".

Jeez. Truly the most insufferable type of snob. They won't even check out new music by the same artists they worship, if the music is made after the deadline.

To me, they are just scared they can't keep up with current music and find that saying only 10 years or whatever were ever good in music makes it simpler.

Yeah, the same phenomenon applies to 80's Heavy Metal fans who insist on believing that Metal made after that decade "is dead" somehow.

  • Every genre has it's snobs.

I think the main culprits are the metal, classic rock, indie rock and emo fans. Being a former big fan of alternative/rock (I now listen mainly to pop/hip hop) I've personally found it's these people who are the most aggressive when it comes to their favourite genres and they also seem to be the quickest to criticise others.

  • Sadly metal, I think. You know all those "real" metalheads who cannot accept nu metal as a metal subgenre etc.

  • I have to agree with the majority and say metal but those that I've personally come across, who prefer the emo genre, appear to be the worst offenders for me. They'll obsess over a particular band for a while until they "become mainstream" (which is another way of complaining that they're not the only people listening to that band so they no longer appear eclectic and niche in taste) and then every time that band is mentioned they'll announce "They were good before they went mainstream."
    Drives me potty.

  • Yeh, however I don't think that the "happy/social pop people" have such wide music taste they claim to have either. Many of them can't understand the "experimental" and less catchy music. I know some who even thinks that electropop bands like Ladytron sound too weird. But if you just like a few bands from each genre, I think you will get along with all kinds of music interested people.

    You'd think that, wouldn't you?

But being "eclectic" just makes the people who like the "cool" music you like think you're a big fake - after all, someone who plays pop can't possibly understand experimental music! And the pop fans think you're a huge poser, trying to look cool by pretending to like "cool" music.

So no, you can't win the battle against music snobs, no matter what your taste is.

You're right, I didn't think of that ;/ And even if someone only listen to the "cool" music when he/she's among snobs who listen to that kind of music, he/she's interest for other genres will be revealed sooner or later (=snobs will think he/she's fake). Damn all music snobs.

Yeah. Basically, the only people who don't deserve snobbery are those that have their exact same taste. Everything else = terrible.

  • Metal! Especially Black Metal. God they make my blood boil....*shudder*

There was a young man from Nunhead
    Who awoke in a coffin of lead;
    'It's cosy enough,'
    He remarked in a huff,
    'But I wasn't aware I was dead.'
  • Almost all people, who listen to 20th century music. They think, that it was the only time, when people made "true" music.
Pop music fans. Most of them don't want to know, that there're other genres, except pop, rock, house and rap. (

  • Death metal, black metal. Like everyone else is inferior in there minds.NOT ALL fans of that music genre, but seems like a fair share.

  • Without a doubt metal.

As much as I adore the genre it sady has a tendancy to attract the most hilariously peudointellectual knobbers i've ever met. Its fun messing with them when, if questioned on listening to other 'untr00' styles of music, you imply you do so because you need to listen to something heavier and original sometimes...

Metald00d: WAI U LISSUN TO NON-METUHLS YOU FASLE!
Me: Yeah sorry about that! You know, sometimes I have to listen to power electronics because I need to hear something extreme from time to time!
Metald00d: RRRAWWRGHLBARRGHLLARRGHKRIEG!!! [procures a painful erection]

especially black metal. I really love that genre, but most (not all) listeners think you can only be trve if you listen to metal and nothing else, and metal is the best in the world, everyone who says sth different has no taste. blablablabla. they also feel sooo cool because they listen to such a grim and hateful music. rwarrrr

nostalgic listeners of 20th century pop can also be very snobbi.

I'm sure I love BM for being "grim and hateful" as much as the snobs, and for generally appealing to love of lo-fi roughly recorded music. But I find it difficult imagining listening to that exclusively. I need variety and challenge! Those people can hardly pushing their boundries or exposing themselves to new ideas by trying to appear as kvlt as possible.

  • Goths. Except that Goth isn't really a genre (more so an umbrella term encapsling music of many different genres that fall within a certin aesthetic and/or are majorly liked by people within a certain scene). Which is one of the reasons why I find music snobbery in the goth subculture to be so ridiculous. Why belittle someone for not knowing about Bauhaus (or liking Psyclon Nine over Bauhaus) when the whole subculture is defined by aesthetic anyway? Really, there isn't a common sound or musical structure to the bands goth snobs attribute as "true goth music". The real truth is goth snobs don't want to be associated with certain people and use the guise of "knowing your roots" or "knowing true *goth* music" to exclude and include whomever then desire. If that tactic falls through they'll then use the guise of dressing in "true goth fashion" to exclude whoever they wish. Last tactic is "scene involvement". Don't know [insert local scene celebrity here]? Don't go clubbing every single night at your local ookie spooky club? Then you're not a Goth. Since it IS all about "supporting the scene" (which is a secret code word for kissing ass and being an ass). After seeing all the hoops they put people through it makes you wonder how in the world is Goth "all about music"?!

When really, the early scene they so romanticize was one big melting pot and not the elitist promise land they think it was.

  • Metal. I love it, but I gotta admit, some fellow metalheads give all of us a bad name.

  • Metal (Any Type) & Indie (Rock Mostly)

  • Metal, mainly because I know that scene very well. Bands that have been important to the evolution of the genre (e.g. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Judas Priest and many many more) get slagged off for several reasons, the most popular one being selling out (though many don't even know the difference between selling out and experimenting). Even the more popular black metal bands 'sold out' in the minds of the snobs, because they're not 'underground' enough for them. It never really occured to them that bands are allowed to grow and it's not their decision to make >.<

  • Classic Rock fans, they're probably the ones that really look down upon others...

I just typed all this out and then I accidentally hit escape ;_; here I go again....

    Metal.

So I was at a party not too long ago with some metal fans. When it came to put on some music through one of their iPods they made such a big fuss about apparently not knowing what 'party music' is. They said it like that made them really obscure and unique and awkard and marginalised, almost like they were proud of it. Of course they know what party music is, we all do - we all know Rihanna and Britney (might not like them, but we know them). Fair enough we all have different interpretations of what party music is but stereotypically it's the usual electropop stuff, right? The iPod they used had plenty of Katy Perry and Ke$ha on it and when Ke$ha came on they all made a big deal about how it's soooooo crap and they have absolutely no idea who she is...opinion or act? Then some metal came on and they all started headbanging...I felt awkward (maybe I'm a bit snobby too ): ?) To be fair to them they eased up throughout the night and maybe they just felt like they had to keep up the I'M SO ANTI-MAINSTREAM image because we'd only just met and maybe they thought I'd make fun of them if they put on Ke$ha right away?

Anyway heres another story. One day I excitedly told my friend that I was going to Reading music festival. She, quite factually, told me that it wouldn't be as good as when she went to Sonisphere. I asked why. She said that metal fans were better. Sort of rained on my parade there. This is the same person who told me that I should listen to more "brutal" music when I said I like Alanis Morissette...

But of course not all metal fans are like that lets not be music snobs ourselves blah blah blah.............

  • Anyone who only listens to one genre of music and thinks everything else is crap. I don't understand how people can only listen to one genre of music.

Fans of older music (especially classic rock fans) who say ALL new music is crap. No, it isn't, they just don't want to give any new artists a chance and they are also too lazy to search for good music among current bands that might not be mainstream.
