Recommend me some First Wave

  • Recommend me some First Wave

    Hi,

I joined this group because recently I've gotten into The Clash. So, recommend me some other first wave punk artists.

Also, I think we need to have a group tag for the radio, as the group radio has a lot of other stuff.

The three big ones are necessary, The Clash, The Ramones, and the Sex Pistols. Beyond that the Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, Buzzcocks are pretty good.

A group tag is a good idea. Any ideas? We could always use simply "first wave punk"

  • I think it's already very common throughout the land...something else..

  • Ramones are essential for any first wave collection. You should also pick up some Dead Kennedys, Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, and Stooges.

Bad Religion started in 1980, so it can be disputed. But The Adicts formed and started making music in the late 1970s, certainly apart of the first wave.

Pink Floyd is the second most listened to band in this group? How odd. o_o

From my so far minimal knowledge, I'd reccomend Sham 69, The Rezillos (they only have one album, so they're easy to get into), the Adicts, and Siouxsie and the Banshees' first album.

The Gun Club.. do you guys have that stuff? it's great.

Anyway.. if you have the stooges might as well have, MC5 and Velvet Underground aswell.

  • More 1st wave...

For true 1st-wave, check out 101'ers (Joe Strummer's band before Clash), U.K. Subs, Anti Nowhere League, Vice Squad, Toy Dolls, Subhumans (1st-wave in spirit if nothing else), Magazine (a fork of Buzzcocks), The Jam, and The Damned.

For some early American punk, DK, Stooges/Iggy, Ramones and Bad Religion have already been mentioned. But also check out other early American rockers like Minor Threat (along the same vein as Circle Jerks), Adolescents, Descendents, 7 Seconds (long the same vein as Minor Threat), early Black Flag (before Rollins), Social Distortion, X-Ray Spex, and Bad Brains.

...That should keep you busy for a while. :)

Oh my, quite a lot of bands. Indeed it should keep us busy.

  • Television for sure. In my opinion, by far the best of the early punk bands. Buzzcocks and Wire are also worth a listen.

  • well, if you now check the tag, there might be more..

  • My Advice: Ignore NY Punk--A NY Punk

Others have pointed the way so here are some good ones you won't find on any Top Ten Lists but meant a lot to me. You're lucky, you can get them for free. . . back in my day any punk record was hard to find. . .

I remember going into Bleeker Bob's (supposedly the hippest record shop in NYC cira 1979) asking for Sham 69. . . they didn't have anything for an aspiring punk other than a used Richard Hell album and a lecture about NYC being the true home of punk, . . .Kid, don't believe it! As FEAR said: "NY's alright. . .if you like saxaphone!"

The Damned single "Neat, Neat, Neat" was technically the first punk record. . .Yet, they never really kept up the energy. However, they did record an almost perfect rock album:

    The Black Album (The Damned)

    ALSO FIND:

    HANX
    Stiff Little Fingers
A great live record which really captures the feel of the era.

    Snap!
    The Jam
A greatest hit double LP that is the beautiful pop side of early punk.

"Super Black Market Clash" which contains many classics including "1977", a track I waited 15 years to hear (after seeing the compelling lyrics somewhere).

    The Punk Singles Collection: '77-'80

    True early punk rock

Richard Hell is the father of all punk rock. Apart from that you should check out Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. From the later bands i'd recommend The Misfits and Joy Division.

  • Strains of strains

You've got chronological first wave punk, geographical, and categorical. In the 70s, you've gotta say Iggy Pop was precursor/crossover to punk, as was Nick Cave. But then you have The Clash, The Ramones, Richard Hell, Buzzcocks, The Damned, Fear, X, as first-round - Costello was punk, but not like the Sex Pistols. Different vibe. THen you've got the NYC stuff (Ramones, NY Dolls, Television, Talking Heads [though TH were more art school than pure punk]), and then the wave out of SoCal, led by X, The Minutemen, The Meat Puppets, Descendants (SF?), Misfits, Black Flag, The 88s, The Slits, Fear, Circle Jerks, TSOL, Alley Cats, Dead Kennedys (SF).

Best punk concerts for my money: Clash (81 & 83), The English Beat (ska actually - 78, 83), X (81), Circle Jerks (79), Fear (81), Killing Joke (second wave - 84), and The Jam in 82 (but that was Mod, or sub-strain of punk). Social Distortion was problaby second wave, but can't quite remember wheh they first emerged out of the L.A. suburban landscape. Same with the Vandals.

As a SoCal kid you couldn't get around the fact that X defined the movement there. Their album, "Los Angeles," articulated the L.A. scene.

Perhaps already mentioned: check out Penelope Spheeris' documentary "The Rise and Fall of Western Civilization" for a telling slice of punk history.
