    haha, wow

if this guy is talking the truth, than everyone's got emo wrong. but doesn't the public decide what the genre is? if enough people call it something, it becomes it becomes that genre, thats what happend with pop which started out as just popular music and now its n'sync and spears. so if enough people call dashboard and my chem emo, than u can't argue. all u can say is that bands such as saetia were original emo, and now it has evolved, for better or worse.. thats for the public to decide.

    Re: haha, wow

what sasalukac, you DIDN'T KNOW? that is scary. of course the "emo" you listen to isnt really emo. a few years ago i saw some article in a zine predict this. that in the year 2000 and afterwards, there would be people who listen to bands that MTV have labeled "emo", but really aren't. that people would totally forget the real emo bands, and think ATDI invented emo. scary stuff indeed...

    spread the word. peace.

Stop living in the past, yer that is the "real" emo, But now songs which have emotional meaning is classed as emo. besides the music your on about, you cant hardly hear the lyrics, so whats the point in it?

You're a complete idiot. Living in the past? Fuck no, alot of bands around the world are still spreading the emo-tradition. Screamo is just another word for bands playing the old-style emo like Portrait.

By deduction of beholder's logic, anyone who is not listening to Bach, doesn't know classical music. (why - Bach made what defined classical music, therefore listening to modern classical artists who changed this sound means I'm not listening to classical music.)
    And that doesn't make sense.

Correction, alot of bands continue to make oldstyle emo. And alot of evolution was made, but bands like From Autumn to Ashes are not from the same branch in the grand musictree as bands like The Pine or La Quiete. Those lastmentioned bands are direct successors of bands like Saetia and Orchid, like they are direct successors of bands like Mohinder or Palatka.

Recordscompanies found out that alot of bands like My Chemical Romance had hitpotential, they just needed a name for the genre. For god knows why, they took emo and screamo. Silly people.

A question - what do you consider "Sunny Day Real Estate"? Many deem them grunge, but just as many call them the orginators of the modern definition of emo.

  • They are an indie emo band. Like Appleseed Cast, or like Mineral.

  • First time I've heard the word emo was in referral to life of Agony's "River runs red". Now that's real emo to me. Everything else is MTV's product IMHBCO. :)

  • How the fuck can you really label a band under a specific genre, and then argue about it?? All bands differ in styles and to label them under a specific genre, is stupid!!! Why label music?? What difference does that make to the songs?? It doesnt change what the band sings about, or plays etc. Instead it makes people like all you, sit here and determine which bands come under what style!! Don't you think thats a bit pathetic?? Cos if you really liked a band, and supported them, then no matter whether they are 'emo' or 'death metal,' does it even matter what genre they are if they make really good music?? No it doesnt!!!!

You're an intelligent man. And flynny yes the genre does matter. It helps direct others to find the music and it helps describe the style of music the people listen to. Get over it. Emo is emo, poprock is poprock, pop-punk is pop-punk. We need genres and generalizations.

It's not so easy to label genres. Who knows what's right and wrong? Who knows what a genre really is? Who can be the expert to point out?
    Noone, so the masses decide.

The masses decide for ignorant, lazy people who don't take the time to research what a genre truly is. All those "emo" bands can very easily just be classified as a variety of things, ranging from pop to poprock to pop-punk. They aren't emo. Emo is a specific genre. Just like how hip-hop is. Would you consider Built To Spill hip-hop? Would you consider Orchid jazz? No.

PS That sounded angry, and I'm not. Just stating what I think :)

yea that works too, but in some cases like certain bands such as Name Taken there is no hardcore to be found. but that's a good way to put it, good work hehe :)

Haha, yeah I know what you mean. But it's just easier to play it safe and call it "hardcore punk" because well... a lot of emo doesnt sound like The Ramones and such =P
