By the way: boffin sounds a bit like mufin, a new music player with recommendation features. Is this intentional?

Like I said to doug via email, for some reason its not loading up at all for me now. I see the process in task manager but no program loads up. Shame as it seems a really cool app.

Further to this if I log in as another user it will load. So there must be some local user setting associated with boffin thats causing this.

Do you mean it works when you log-in as a different windows user? Or as a different last.fm user?

If you mean windows user: maybe your non-working user has a borked LocalCollection.db (in the same dir as the log file) - you can feel free to delete that file (when boffin is not running) to start from scratch.

First I've heard of Mufin... our inspiration was the word:

Which version of OSX? Can you open up the .app bundle and see if that file is there (it is for me, or I wouldn't ask ;)

Yes I mean as a different windows user.

Deleting that file does make the opening dialog which asks for the directory to scan to appear, however the main program still does not.

    Network

I have a problem, my music is on a NAS, and when I add the folder, it says No Tags have been found. When I go to scan music again, it has changed the folder.

It was \\media\music but is now C:\\media\music which obviously is wrong ;)

This should be fixed in next release (imminent). Meanwhile, try mapping a drive to \\media\music and select that for scanning.

it's there, but the dirname is /Applications/Boffin.app/Contents/Frameworks/QtOpengl.framework

and the referenced path is Frameworks/QtOpenGL.framework (note the case difference). i'm using case sensitive HFS, so i bet that's the problem.

Looking at the log it seems to hang on something called QPainter.

Works like a charm on my Mac! Even the scanning of my music library of 65.000+ songs went like the wind (allthough after a while it stopped displaying the floating images). Now boffing as we speak. I like the 'stealthy' shuffle aspect of it a lot: you really never know what will be playing next, because there is no visible playlist. It's a nice new addition to the other great shuffle option I use otherwise to explore my library; iTunes Genius. Well done!

The idea of classifying music by tags is ace. Now I listen to music I rarely do on a regular day.

    Cons: music randomly stops sometimes.
I don't know if Boffin plays my library or uses music from the last.fm servers.
It takes a lot of time to start up and my collection isn't that large (over 11, 000 songs).

Some extra eye-candy would be nice, but I'm sure that will happen in new iterations of the program.

God, working for last.fm must be the coolest thing ever.

    Greetings from Mexico =P

    Cons: noted.

All the music is from your local collection! Rediscover! :)

Was thinking about something like this the other day strangely. For me because so much of my music isn't on my computer these days it would make much more sense to do it from the artist in my last.fm library.

Anyone built it on linux yet?

very cool! I have my own quodlibet plugin (http://code.google.com/p/thisfred-quodlibet-plugins/source/browse/trunk/lastfmtagger.py) which synchronizes my own tags from and to last.fm, but of course that doesn't employ the wisdom of the crowd and so most of my music isn't tagged.

Did anyone manage to get this running on any flavor of linux yet? I'll have a go at it later tonight, but do share experiences/tips if you have them!

    Failed to initialize properly 0xc0000005

Can't run it. Tried messing around with putting the dll:s in the program directory and creating manifest files etc but couldn't get it to run.

In process explorer I see three handles created for boffin to VC80.CRT and then a "CritSecOutOfMemoryEvent".... whatever that indicates.

Seems a nice program to try that I would love to see it integrated into the standard client.

@mxcl: I was wondering: how does the randomisation process (excuse my French) work? In other words; how is the order in which Boffin plays my songs established? Some kind of fancy shuffle algorithm? (I'm not technical at all but still curious ;-)

BTW: Boffin still works like a charm, no problems at all!

    Has great potential...

Impressive! I really like that it works off your local selection of music. I'd love it to do FLAC files, but I'll settle for AAC too!

I couldn't find a way to change the directory it scans once you've set it (on an Intel iMac running 10.5.6)...

Would love to actually SEE a playlist too...

    Great start! Thanks
