    iPod shuffle & iScrobbler

Is the iPod shuffle compatible w/ the iPod updating features of iScrobbler? The iPod shuffle appears to update play counts in my main library, but not 'last played' dates.

If it doesn't updated last played dates, Apple seriously broke something. And if that is true, then the iPod Shuffle won't work with AS (since proper dates are required for submission). Are you sure you don't have manual sync turned on? Manual sync is not supported (as it does not update the dates). You must have one of the Automatic modes selected. Also, do you have a "Recently Played" playlist. That exact name is required for 0.7.x.

Well, as far as I can tell, the only options are "enable disk use" or not. I turned that off. As to the not updating the played dates, see the second paragraph and the comments here -- from this and what you say, I think probably it just won't work with AS, at least not until they update the firmware to include dates (if that's even possible).

By the way, thanks for all your great work on the plugin.

Well, that blows donkey balls. I won't be getting a Shuffle. Not only will it not work with AS, but my whole playlist system is based off of Last Played.

If enough people send intelligent requests for Last Played support to feedback@apple.com, maybe Apple will do something about this huge oversight.

Truly. I still love my iPod shuffle, but that's a shame.

Here's a web form for submitting feedback particularly about the iPod:

  • I'd guess it doesn't have a clock on board as all it really is is a USB drive with an mp3 player tacked on.

It may not be a disaster with a bit of sleight of hand. Suppose I sync my shuffle, play some songs, and then plug it back in. We know the time now, the time of the first sync, and that a set of songs were played in that window. Could we not just update the "Last Played" time to fit in that window? Either space the tracks out evenly, pack them at the beginning, or at the end. Obviously this is not as accurate as having a clock on the shuffle, but the more often you sync the less error there would be. My playlists don't list anything played in the last month, so a few hours or even a few days of inaccuracy really isn't that important.
    What do you think?

    confirmed

I just spoke to someone at Apple tech support who confirmed that the iPod Shuffle does not have a clock and therefore probably wouldn't update the Recently Played list the way we'd need it to do. So everybody's right, and everybody's sad.

  • Amarok submits played tracks

Amarok is able to submit tracks played on a shuffle. I suppose it uses a strategy similar to what scudderfish has suggested.

I suppose I'm a bit of a last.fm nut, but I actually connect it to a linux machine with Amarok simply to submit tracks (I have my primary library on a Mac with iTunes).

eduardgrebe: what ipod shuffle do you have ?
I am seriously considering buying the 1GB version, because of its recent price drop.

The ability to submit played tracks to last.fm is the main reason holding me back.

Since I use amarok as a main player, this feature you mentioned would be great (I can't find it anywhere on the documentation, so I'm just asking to be sure ;) )

I got my Shuffle for free (as a pack-in with my shiny new Macbook) and I was hoping to use it with Last.fm.

    Well, it's a damn shame.

    It works in amarok

I have bought my (1 Gb, 2nd gen) ipod shuffle, and can confirm that it works fine with amarok. My tracks get submitted to last.fm perfectly.

  • waiting for amarok in osx

I am really looking forward for amarok in mac os. I hate itunes, its a pain in the ass!

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocketship underpants don't help.
