    Comment Posting

The shoutboxes are dead, what needs to be done is modernizing the setup. Steal ideas from facebook where you can like comments, or youtube where you can single out other users in your comments. The one-way commenting system is outdated and doesn't do anything to spark good conversation in the already dead shoutboxes.
    Any other ideas?

Yes. The shoutboxes are outdated. What's needed is the ability to approve or disapprove a post. That way you can possibly customize a threshold, for example hide posts with a disapproval rating of 50%. Or -5 or less. @replies is also a great feat.

I was about to make a similar thread myself.

But I would prefer the +1/-1 youtube version.

Agree 100% with this, not that I don't like scrolling through multiple pages filled with copy/pastes or flame wars.

Haha. Last.fm's shoutbox can be interesting the way it is. Giving people the option to "like" something that they might have otherwise actually voiced their own approval of isn't ideal in my opinion.

I totally agree. There's too much unnecessary noise in the shoutboxes. Especially with the posts like, "This is awesome. [6]"

I agree. I made a thread and was directed here. http://www.last.fm/forum/21717/_/971402#f15793709

I think like 5 years ago when this website was new, I kind of led a movement to get shoutboxes added. But the internets have changed and shoutboxes don't work well anymore.

Yes, KtM407, although a +1, -1, system might be one possible solution, another might be subscribe, unsubscribe (so you could track a particular pages shoutboxes easily). More elaborate systems, such as nested shout boxes making a threaded system, are also possible. At present, only the problem is clear - we cannot tell which solution is best, because that depends, in part, in how things are implemented 'under the hood'.

  • I can't give a '+1' or '-1' to this idea.
I do think the shoutboxes could be improved, but I don't think going the "Social-Networking Way" is the way to go.

To improve shoutboxes, I would add the ability to add new lines to shouts (I really hate it how Last.fm eliminates newlines and squashes all the shout in one big block of text). And I would add the ability to actually reply to the shouts - I know this can be done, but I mean, make it more explicit, like adding "This shout is a reply to X's shout" or something in those lines.

... Those two ideas probably belong in another thread. Anyhow, I don't like the idea of adding likes and "thumbs ups" to shouts.

I agree with NightVermillion's two suggestions. In my previous post to this thread I suggested nested shout boxes as an aesthetic for this.

I don't mean to bring up an old topic, but I did a search and this is the most relevant thread I could find. So instead of starting a new one, I'll post here and make it quick and simple.

Shout boxes and posting of comments on personal profiles. I would like to suggest the idea of approving comments and having them only viewable to friends. These two don't exist at the moment and the options that are available do not suffice (my needs at least).

Thanks for reading and I hope there is some consideration.

  • Thanks for the feedback

    Hello everyone,

Thanks for your feedback on shoutboxes. We would like to improve them and we'd especially like to make it easier for people to have conversations.

Unfortunately, it's not a quick or easy job, and we have several larger projects to complete before we're going to be able to get to it.

I'm afraid you'll have to bear with us for a bit longer. We appreciate your patience.

It wouldn't be a priority in my book. The shout boxes are, at least, quick. I find YouTube comments hang quite often & it is unclear if they've gone. FB pages are very messy imho.
These forum pages work well though dont they? Couldn't you use the same layout?
