A "Use this photo on my profile" option

A friend and I were discussing this as an alternative to trying to separate all of the profiles of several artists who share the same name. (A good example is Nemo - "There are 14 artists by this name.")

Ideally every artist would have their own page, and although I've come to appreciate the way fans have edited wikis to include information about all of the artists who share one name, the problem remains that for some of my favorite bands there's no chance I'll ever see the "correct" photo on my profile. This is because other artists with the same name have hundreds (if not thousands) more listeners and pic votes.

I think having an option available to choose which artist photo we'd like to represent an artist on our page would really help with this issue. I really think it's worth considering, even as a temporary solution to the multiple artists w/ one name issue, as it would enable listeners to keep their profiles as accurate as possible (I know seeing the wrong photo on their profiles is a major reason why people get so upset about profiles not being separated). This could also stop some of the "photo wars" going on in artists' profiles.

Btw I took a quick look through the forum and didn't see any recent posts about this, so I'm sorry if it's already been suggested a million times before.

  • it has been suggested quite a few times, but as far as i know, those who could actually make it happen have not commented upon it. let's hope they do this time... it is a great idea, and it doesn't seem too hard to implement (correct me if i am wrong).

    not quite there...

  • i'd like this feature, for some reason people vote some terrible pictures to the top.

Yeah, it could be a great idea even once the multiple artists w/ one name issue will be solved.

Yes, it is a great idea. I didn't see this thread before, so yesterday I have started another one with the same suggestion. Good coincidence, no? Sorry, moderators.

I totally agree with coldroom. I've been thinking of it these days, he/she read my mind. It'll be an easy and likable feature.

One of the best ideas I have read here.

    Make it happen, someone.

Ugh, I really get annoyed when I see ugly outdated pictures in my library or -- even worse -- BUTTugly images from bands who unfortunately share the same name as the ones I listen to but not are not in the least related.
It's that people will get a total different from my music taste seeing and associating just these pictures.
Plus, a lot of them are an eyesore, plain as that.

Would optional tweaking be a possibility? Shouldn't be too hard to implement, I'd guess.

Also, it should be one of the TOP priorities on the list, seeing as last.fm is mostly all about the looks now.

Also, if it's possible, people's choices to their profiles could count as votes to that chosen photo.

  • This has been suggested as a feature (I can't tell you though if it will actually be implemented!).

  • glad to have a staff comment on this issue.. i think it would be pretty great.

I agree, thanks a lot for telling us, foreverautumn! =)
We (or at least I for sure) would be glad if you/staff in general could keep us up to date on this issue!

Hah, I've already thought that I'm the only one with this idea. Nice to see that other people don't like ugly photos in bad quality or photos of wrong artists in their profile either. Also, it's nice to see that this issue has already been discussed in the last.fm team. I can just hope that this feature will be implemented as soon as possible.

I think it's a great idea. Not just because it'd help out the multiple artist issue but it'd also give people the freedom to choose their favourite image for their profile rather than having the image everybody else likes.

Ahh! I just want to thank everyone who's taken the time to post here & support this idea :D
And thanks for letting us know that it's been officially suggested as a feature, foreverautumn!

    *fingers crossed*

And the Lord said unto John; Come forth and receive eternal life.
But John came fifth and won a wine rack.
  • Great idea.

I don't mind having a random image show up for artists I listen to, kind of keeps things fresh.

But, I DON'T like having an image of a band I don't like/don't listen to show up when they have the same name as a band I DO like.
