last fm has now become the biggest joke on the web. its that bad that it isnt funny any more. i for one will be leaving very soon if nothing changes. the moderators need sacking as they havnt a clue on how to handle critisism either

Insulting the moderators is going to help to get the new layout changed how?

  • I remember back when the last layout changed. A lot of people hated it (Including me). And it died down. Yeah. The problem is that the "We miss the old last.fm" group only ever got to 600+ members. This one is currently at 10,000+ and judging by this I'm thinking it's more than a "vocal minority" like it turned out to be last time. Anyway that thing of Beta users getting used to it is bullshit, most of the stuff I saw when I was let in was majority "Man this real-time charts thing is awesome but the layout sucks shit". Mods please stop being so stubborn, I understand you guys spent a lot of time on this but it's gonna hurt more in the long run if you keep this piece of shit layout.

I still hate the new layout
"Talking to a metalhead about music is like talking to Ann Coulter about politics"
"How can hip-hop be dead when Wu-Tang is forever?"

No it won't, this new layout uses complex subliminal reverse psychology methods through the adverts forcing you to embrace the new layout, it's only a matter of time.

  • you do realize that restarting from scratch does not in any way prevent someone to i.e. mantain the same design layout adapting it to the new stystem, yes? especially in php which has so many lovely features such as mantaining the body and content separate from the design. and that would just solve the layout issue that so many people appear to hate, not you or many others per chance but still a large number of people. As I said, that would depend on how well written the code for the original design was. If it wasn't well written, it would be more difficult to adapt many aspects of the old design to a new set of code than it would be to create a new design from scratch.

Furthermore, around ten thousand of around ten million is not a particularly large number of people. It just seems like a large number of people because they're by and large the only ones who care enough to voice their opinion on the forums. There are a number of people who have voiced positive feedback regardless, you may have noticed, but most of them are too put off by the personal attacks on last.fm staff to bother staying around threads like this for too long.

and i still mantain that launching a new version without informing people that because of this new format so many features of the website will be missing in action for a while (undefined period of time) if not forever is highly unprofessional.I never disagreed that that could have been handled better, so I'm unsure why you're bringing this up.

Leave the moderators alone. They have been absolutely brilliant since go live. Staff didn't (couldn't?) stick around for the backlash but all the moderators stayed. They took a hell of a lot of abuse from a whole bunch of irate brats. Time and again, their words were twisted and thrown back at them.

I can't believe people are STILL complaining. Get over it. It's not news anymore.

My suggestions to improve the site and make it more functional/useable:

An option to collapse or hide the flash player for people that never use it. This setting should be global (i.e. if collapsed on your profile it should show as collapsed on every profile you visit).

An option to collapse/hide the activity tracker. This setting should also be global.

Chart settings selected on one's profile (time frame/number shown) should be global for consistency and ease of use.

A text-only/no pictures setting for the library. Ideally the library would be displayed as an extended chart showing rankings if this setting is selected. Again, a global setting.

Bring top neighbors back to the profile page in a sidebar.

Change the shout wall back to a shout box and move it back to a side bar with the other peripheral information.

Bring the weekly snapshot chart back to the profile page and place it where the current shout wall is.

Add inbox notification back to the header, visible on every page.

Change recent tracks listing to single line entries (artist - song title - when listened). This would help reduce the clutter and also be easier to read. Also add a no-pictures/no-quilt option.

It's nice to see that the staff is actually listening to suggestions and implementing at least some of them (e.g. increasing charts back to 500, putting recent visitors back on the profile page, adding a jump to page # feature in the library, bringing back the paint it black setting, etc). Thanks guys.

Seven Deadly Sins? I thought it was a to-do list!

Just to add after a bit more use: user experience was surely not a priority on this redesign. You need more clicks to accomplish the same on some features. Information that is relevant to me is not given priority visually. If I wanted to see nice big pictures of the bands I'm listening to I'll google it, I don't want it cluttering my "home" page.

Yet, I still think the worse thing is the color palette, It's really stressing. I hadn't seen it before but actually prefer this beta layout that showed up. How come it wasn't looked into during development?

I agree with the talk about being a social app or not. Since I started using Audioscrobbler this was about MY music, keeping track of MY preferences and similar people. Social features are just a bonus, they are far from my main interest here. Unfortunately the new site appears to be aimed at a different public, maybe I (and many others) are getting old and are not the most profitable ones. Anyway it is hard to lose something you liked. I had a place on the internet where it was all about music; this seems to be a major step away from the original audioscrobbler intent.

I know. This is true. We still don't know how much is all set and how much we can change. I apologise. I had a chance to get to know the new site back in beta testing and forget some people are only just meeting it just now. It took me quite a while to get past the anger, I have to admit. When I say past, read suppress... :(

  • maybe last fm should put some massive voting poll for it? lol

this is not a democratic republic

its a benevolent dictatorship. which means well but it seems their stance is now "well you had your impute and liked it." so basically the subscribers/testers apparently liked it in beta and therefore it is
    :shrugs:

  • I wonder why the old owner didn't (if he didn't) pour some cash into some additional server hardware with all the money CBS gave him?

I hope he didn't pull the "cash check and abandon website" method.

And to all the "I am gonna leave" folks, why are you whining here and not deleting your account?

Just get over it people, it reminds me of the same amount of bitching during the 2000 presidential elections.

The old design is GONE/DEAD/NO LONGER AROUND so stop asking for it back, especially the extremists and hardliners. Your 10k person group isn't gonna help too much without proper criticism.

it is a dead website. it has gone to meet its maker. it is no more. it has popped its clogs. it has kicked the bucket. it is kapooot. it has gorn orff. it is definitely deceased. it has ceased to be. it is bereft of life. it is pushing up the daisies. its metabolic processes are now history. it has shuffled off this mortal coil. it is an ex-website.

(I couldn't help myself. It was too irresistible!)

Now THAT'S a petition I'd sign. I agree that some people are being downright immature in the manner of their complaints, but Babs is acting just as bad. There are extremes to both sides. "Irate brats"? Highly insulting. Not all of us who dislike the site design can be so lazily -- and offensively -- categorized.

    Mute point.
Most of those 10 million people don't use the forums.
It's obvious that the majority of the users that do use the forums and do use Last fm for more than just scrobbling have serious problems with the new site.

The fact that over 80% of the beta testers voted against the new site says enough to me.

  • I agree

I whole heatredly agree, i used to check last.fm so often and found some rad bands through it, and it was easier to navigate. Im just not a huge fan of the new layout, and i think its much like the google example.

    * The picture people are referring to (this one) is a user-made picture of what one person thought might look better. Please do NOT think that is or was how the beta looked at any point.
    * I read a lot of talk about the previous owner nowadays and people saying they did better than CBS. Perhaps it is nice to know that Last.fm/audioscrobbler.net started out as two uni-projects, that got together and became the site that it is now (this is the ultra-condensed version of the story). The site/name/brand was sold to CBS, but that never really changed the people working there. Including the people that started (and thus sold) it.
    * I am not going to tell (again) that quite a lot of the missing features are to be returned... that has been posted (and in a lot of cases, ignored) all over these forums...
    * I want to urge the lot of you to treat each other with respect.

Remember to say "thank you" for the things you haven't had

Do you spot incorrect auto-corrections? You can flag them at the artist/track-page.

and where do you get the ten thousand people anyway, from a group count that even I haven't joined as I think others that are unhappy with this situation? just like there are people happy with the new last.fm but don't voice their opinions, there are the same that are unhappy but just a) don't care that much as they use this site mostly for scrobbling and not for surfing b) are voicing their opinions on other non-english speaking forums or c) are voicing their opinions here but had to disagree with the moronic manifestation of immaturity of some other posters and don't want to be related to a group that instead collects many that behave just like that. and if in the italian community alone there are people that just like me are unhappy but haven't been vocal in this forum, i can easily suppose that there might be people from other countries that see it like that as well. So let's not start pulling out biased statistics now, please. I already got mad enough with the ones that made up statistics when voicing against this change and don't want to get into that again.

ETA - but apparently someone else had already replied on that, sorry if i ended up reiterating.

because we have been bickering over the design for a few pages already, which seems to cloud that my main issue is not so much the design, which while still finding it horrible isn't my main problem, but the treatment received and the way things have been handled.

4 what the hell is that flash music player doing on my 'home' page"

    To play songs?
considering that that's only true for subscribers, since free users cannot listen to their playlist but only previews, it's not entirely fair that having that flash player clogging the home page isn't optional.
