Descripción
Musicians of the baroque period were expected to be resourceful improvisors, and musical historians have often noted the similarity in this respect between baroque music and jazz. The Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren sets out here to explore that common ground with the soprano Jeanette Köhn, three jazz colleagues and a choir. The gentle improvisations fold themselves seamlessly into short pieces by Bach, Handel and Purcell. More surprising is how well the timbres of soprano saxophone, trombone and guitar suit the original melodies. The effect in Handel's Gia nel seno and Purcell's When I Am Laid in Earth is gorgeous.
