It's been fifteen years since Green Day erupted onto MTV with 'Basket Case'. Hailing from California, the three bratty boys began spouting what would become the cliches that continue to define pop-punk to this day. After six albums the band took a four year break and, after a sly side project, came back with American Idiot, an album that sought to define opposition to globalisation and its macabre figurehead George W. Bush. Even after five years, songs like 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' and 'American Idiot' top the band's chart, although the release of 21st Century Breakdown mixed things up a little.
After putting another side project to bed, the band's eighth studio album proved to be a three act concept narrative, loosely telling the story of Gloria and Christian and their troubled romance in the faltering hours following the Bush Administration. Lead single 'Know Your Enemy' stomped around the radio all summer, angry and bitter, trailing the new album and its seven million scrobbles wonderfully. It was soon followed by '21 Guns', 'East Jesus Nowhere' and the title track as you lapped up the new record.
The band will continue to tour in support of 21st Century Breakdown through 2010.
